But by the same token you have to accept it's football and some years we'll under perform. It can only take a couple of bad injuries and the season could come apart. Or one or two bad refereeing decisions. This club has definitely built us for a good future. We have a solid core of young players and some older wiser heads as well. There's room for improvement but you can't just throw £150m at someone in panic, if you feel their value is lower. In doing so we could price ourselves out of a move for another player in a key position in the future.

That's why we've heard Pep's been the driver behind Kane more than the board. They're much more focussed on continued improvement through the £40-60m players with potential re-sale value and with peak years ahead of them. Kane is huge money for someone that you're not going to be able to sell and reclaim profit from but they were willing to do it because Pep was so keen for him.

There aren't many top strikers around unfortunately. When you look across world football you can't name many that guarantee you goals. Kane was someone we were willing to pay big money for in spite of reservations, but clearly it wasn't enough still and we'll have to look elsewhere. I personally think a short term acquisition like Ronaldo makes a lot of sense. He'll piss off the rags which is worth the fee alone. He's a name that attracts fans from all over the world which makes commercial sense and he's a player that can bring in other big names. Having him for a year or two will not ruin the club and allows us to move for someone else next summer when there might be a couple more names on the shopping list.
Agree totally with this. Ronaldo is still bloody good and an improvement to what we have regardless of his age so I would happily sign him if it’s what the manager and club feel is the best option at the moment. Young, unproven strikers from second tier clubs like Vlahovic isn’t what I feel we need right now. I’d back Gabby and Ferran to fair better than someone like that this season. Getting a body in just because they play no 9 and paying plenty for said body just doesn’t seem a sensible plan to me.

I don’t know if that what we have done since this has been talked about for 3+weeks now. Seems we could have walked away after they refused a lot sooner imo. Regardless it is what it is. Hopefully wr get someone if not then that’s fine too. I still do think we need a striker
Deals like this - in my very different experience - often take time. Walking away too early could easily have blown a chance at a deal we wanted. It turns out it wouldn't have here, but we had to give it that chance. A week is plenty of time to get a deal done for another striker, IMO. Won't be of Kane's caliber, but there are options out there that would help, I think.

I have to say that I can’t understand posts like these. In the premier league you have to run as fast as you can to stay where you are. We won the league in 2011/12 and failed to strengthen and finished 2nd. We won the league in 2013/14 failed to Street and finished 2nd. We won in 2017/18, added Laporte in January and Mahrez in the summer and won it again in 2018/19. That summer we let Kompany go and didn’t replace him and finished 2nd.

Last season was very unusual, Chelsea had a decent squad but poor manager, you could say the same about united, Liverpool had chronic injury issues. We replaced Kompany and to an extent Sané. The season was curtailed and we adjusted our style better than anyone else.

This season will be different, Liverpool have improved, united have a better squad but still the same poor manager and Chelsea have a brilliant manager and an improved squad. We are trying to trade Bernardo for Grealish but lost our record goal scorer without replacing him, so far.

We don’t have a natural striker at the club so not buying one feels like a huge mistake.
As we are talking replacing our record scorer, how many goals did he get last season that we need to replace, we aren't replacing a prime aguero, we are replacing a player who couldn't walk for half of the season, I hate being disrespectful towards sergio but if you think it will take something special to replace sergio of the last 2 season's you are wrong, very wrong, that sounds awful, however sergio was fucked, and if we put delap in now he would score more than sergio did over the last 2 season's

it’s incompetence because our management listen to the wrong people.
We can all want a Big Mac meal but even if you are an employee there if the owner doesn’t open the door, you can’t get one no matter how much a staff member wants to sell you one.

city’s took levy’s silence as a negotiating tactic. Kane’s brother kept telling them it would get done.

we didn’t walk, we were completely ignored.

They were talking to the help and not the decision maker.
If you believe that we weren’t in negotiations at all for Kane then you must be even more stupid than your Big Mac analogy. We wanted a player, he wanted to come, we bid, it wasn’t enough, we rebid what was our final offer and it wasn’t enough, we walked. Such is business. Levy and City both had a figure in mind and it appears Spurs weren’t budging. On to the next one….

nobody is paying spurs £150million for kane ? just loony levy thinking he can mug us off
i even think if united was in for kane and offered £100million levy would bite their hands off in a flash

i don't know where we go from here with a new striker. everybody will be like levy when city knock on the door asking for one of their players. they know we will need a striker and went to £130million for kane

We've not done too badly with our preference for players with release clauses. We like to know what we will be spending. If the release clause is at a level we're willing to pay we pay it. Clearly we struggle with other players because we're money bags City and we get screwed over. We do our best but you'd be fuming if the club bought one or two players at £80m for no reason other than the fact we had it, and then didn't manage to bring in more as a result.

Financially we're in a position where we've been able to bring in Grealish for £100m and look at Kane for £120m plus. That's quite ridiculous. And nothing to moan about. We wanted a striker but not for £150m. Plenty on here wanted Haaland or Mbappe over Kane. Maybe the board agree and think Haaland next summer with a release clause, or Mbappe who would be a free agent is a better deal for the long term and an extra £30m on Kane now for ultimately 12 months benefit isn't worthwhile when they can use that £30m as a signing on fee to bring in someone for a decade rather than 4-5 years.

We’ll sign neither Haaland not Mbappe we just can’t do those big deals, whether it’s by choice or incompetance

Why do these people on here who know nothing of what has been going on in this saga see fit to try and apportion blame on people who they know by name only and state their ramblings as fact. A million and one things can go wrong in transfer negotiations and we as Joe Public will never know any details let alone enough to criticise any of the participants.

No love lost between Levy and United, going back many years.

If he trades our premium, it's pretty much certain Levy would even deal with the Taliban next year because a 29-year-old Kane won't be worth anywhere near his current valuation.
Thanks S.
I didn't know they had previous.
Seems things have now changed with our deal off. All will be revealed no doubt in time.
Thanks for your opinion.
