Jason Denayer

In your opinion. Clearly the club didn't feel he was at that point yet. I'm all for academy products making it to our first team, and I think we've got some talented players coming through, but you seem to think we've got a plethora of youth talent all ready to be given first team football in one of the best sides in European football, many of whom have had absolutely zero first team football at any level. It's just entirely unrealistic. I fully expect Denayer to be part of our squad next season, as by then he'll have 2 full seasons of first team football under his belt (in Scotland and Turkey) as well as further European experience, and a few more international caps. That doesn't mean he'd be playing regularly, not in his best position (fullback) for City this season if he'd stayed, or competing with the likes of Kompany, Otamendi and Mangala for our first choice centre half, in fact that statement is just unbelievably over optimistic. Competing with Kompany and Otamendi for first choice? Really? You're talking about seasoned internationals, players who are recognised as 2 of the best centre halves around, and probably the best centre half pairing in the Premier League.

Yes, I think he would compete with those two.

The big difference would be, that if he made even half the mistakes Otamendi & Mangala or demichelis had made this season, people would be on my case now, saying it's proof he isn't good enough.

Imagine it was Jason who allowed that geezer to stroll past him for Seville's goal rather than Otamendi ?

People would be on here saying that a top defender would never let that happen, etc.

They all make mistakes. At City currently, mistakes are only allowed if the player is older. It used to be the opposite way around.

I agree that under normal circumstancs, Pellegrini would probably try to bring Bobby Moore back from the dead rather than give Denayer a chance, but in this respect, I'm pretty sure Denayer would be getting game time because he was promised game time in return for signing the contract.

Pellegrini bottled it re central defenders & was left with no alternative but to dump Jason. The position under most pressure has been right back, so I believe even Pellegrini would have realised it was necessary to have backup there (as it still is, Sagna gets injured= big fucking problem, Sagna playing every week= huge chance of getting injured). Put it this way: If Pellegrini couldn't spot, in training every day, week in week out what Galatasray's manager spotted in a day (that JD can play right back)then he doesn't deserve to be manager of such a top club imo.

Simple.

If Sagna gets injured & Maffeo isn't ready, we could end up with a catastrophic problem at right back (which Zabba looks like anyway). If mistakes from that area then costs us points, what seems a casually unimportant decision to some of you, could actually cost Pellegrini his job.

We have no obvious replacement for Sagna, should he get injured, other than Maffeo, who, typically, has never been given a chance & is therefore a complete wild card, as we don't know how he will react/settle, because we have never tried him at a decent level.

At the time we were loaning Denayer out - we didn't know that Zaba was going to pick up the second injury that he did and be out for as long as he has been. I think it's a tad unfair to use that a criticism of the clubs decision. You can't plan for things like that, otherwise we would have a squad of 50 unhappy players, with a number of backups in all positions with not many of them getting games.

I know Otamendi has played right back for Argentina, how successfully i'm not sure. Also Clichy has filled in at right back previously for us as well. Obviously, if Sagna had been injured in the first few months we would have had a problem.

Also, whilst it is true that the right back position has the potential for us to drop points, equally, I would argue, so does blooding youngsters to get experience.

So he missed a couple of games in October through injury. Galatasaray have played 11 league games thus far this season, Denayer has started 4 of these, and come on as a substitute in 1. If he's missed 2 through injury then that leaves another 4 games where he's either been an unused substitute, or else hasn't made the match day squad. Stats show he's played, in all competitions, 575 minutes of football this season, which puts him behind Carole, Chedjou, Balta, Kaya and Sabri in 6th place in terms of minutes on the pitch from Galatasaray's defensive recruits. Where he does seem to be getting decent gametime, strangely, is in the Champion's League. He's started 3 of their 4 games, and missed 1 through injury. Seems unusual that he would be playing regularly in Europe, but not able to nail down a regular starting berth in the Turkish league at this stage.

Either way it does seem to cast into a fair amount of doubt the assertions that, had he remained in Manchester, he'd be playing regular first team football, likely as a right back, and would be challenging Kompany and Otamendi for a place in the heart of our defence. Surely a player who was at that stage of their career, ready to start regularly for one of Europe's top sides, where the quality of options is so high, should be one of the first names on the teamsheet for a team in Turkish football?!

They've played 11 league games. 4 before he arrived on loan, 2 he missed from injury, 4 he started and the most recent he was a substitute.

He's also started all 3 of the Champions League matches he's been fit to play.

The fans love him, he is one of the first names on the teamsheet, but he's also a 20 year old loanee who's just arrived and has had a few injury problems and also been going to Belgium international duty every month.

He is.
