MANCHESTER CITY LEAD UNITED AND ARSENAL IN RACE FOR £20M JAVI GARCIA
20th June 2012
By Greg Heffer for dailystar.co.uk

MANCHESTER CITY are in pole position to capture Benfica's Javi Garcia, it has been reported.

The 25-year-old, who can play as a defensive midfielder or centre-back, impressed City's scouts during his side's Champions League clash with Chelsea this season.

And according to Portuguese newspaper Record, the Premier League champions are Garcia's favoured destination as he looks to leave his current club this summer.

The news will come as a blow to rivals Manchester United and Arsenal, who were also thought to be tracking the former Real Madrid player.

Garcia, who won his first international cap for Spain last month, has a release clause of around £24million in his contract.

But it is reported that Benfica would be willing to let him leave for a slightly lower fee, even though Garcia is a fans favourite at the Estadio da Luz.

City are looking for another defensive midfielder this summer, with Owen Hargreaves having been released this summer and doubts emerging over Nigel De Jong's future at the Etihad.

Indeed, grueling hours but the overtime bonus makes it all worth it.

No offence lol

None taken although it seems to offend you some?

Mentioned him on the Martinez thread about a month ago as a worthy alternative. He really would be

I like you Love City!

On topic, is he any good? only seen him in a couple Champions League games.

It's unlikely we would be able to bring in Javi Martinez so this makes sense. Having someone who can play both the central defensive midfield position and centre back is ideal.

The ideal players for our need in DM/CB ie Di Rossi and Javi Martinez are frustratingly loyal to their club/country so we move on..

I'm glad he does! Precious little to discuss as it is.

Haven't seen much of Garcia. Any time you deal with a Portuguese club, prepare to start at 20m for anyone regardless of fair value.

Manchester City target Javi Garcia will not be leaving Benfica this summer, according to the player's representative.

Reports in the Portuguese media earlier this week suggested that Roberto Mancini would make a bid for the Spanish anchorman as he looks to boost his defensive midfield ranks.

But Garcia's agent, Manuel García Quillon, insists City have not contacted him about the availability of his client and says the midfielder will remain at Benfica.

"I have had no contact from City," he told A Bola. "No-one has called me.

"I have no proposal from England about Javi. He renewed with Benfica and we have nothing more to say. We do not have any club interested in him. He will continue at Benfica."

Garcia, 25, has blossomed since joining Benfica from Real Madrid in 2009, establishing himself as a key figure in the heart of the Portuguese side's midfield.

Crosses another off the list. Its only talkshite quoting agent.

Say one thing today and tomorrow the opposite happens. Managers, players, agents say lots of things, sometimes they're telling the truth, sometimes they're not ("player not going" - bump up asking price, "I don't want to leave" - give me my loyalty bonus). Only when ink touches paper do I believe anything in football. Oh and the odd youtube clip obviously ;)
