St Marys to St Augustine.....
Blues I have been offered a full time job with the U.S govt up in Alaska (Juneau International Airport to be exact). I need some help. I haven't even ever visited Alaska on holiday, and I don't know anybody from Alaska, so it really would be like moving to another country...again!

Has anyone been to Alaska, and if so what do you reckon to moving there?
Has anyone been to Juneau, Alaska, and the same again?

I realise that this is Off Topic on a Manchester City F.C forum, with a vast majority of users living in the U.K, be it Manchester or elsewhere, however I thought I would give it a shot as this is a huge decision for me to undertake.

I currently live in sunny Florida, and some if not most of you might think it completely bonkers to consider leaving Florida for Alaska. There are many pros and cons to this...

Pros; lowest taxes in the U.S, no state tax (sales tax on purchases), beautiful scenery and outdoors, clean air, higher salaries, high standard of living, long summer days and nights (up to 20 hours or sunlight!).

Cons; remote, cold(although Juneau actually has great climate), high cost of living (rent, petrol, utlities etc.), far away from family and palm trees and in fact anywhere really, Juneau is a very small city with small town feel and only a few luxuries.

There isn't even a road system going into Juneau! One has to have a car ferried there somehow, or be without a car, although being without a car is not advisable.

Anybody still reading? This is a huge decision again, and I am trying to simply get as much help as possible before jumping into this.

Ever seen Southpark? It's just like that, only colder

One can't say that living in South Park would not be exciting. Cold is cold, you deal with it, however the worst part they (some) say is the long, miserably dark nights during the winter months. Yet they are replaced by long, beautiful summer days and nights.

Big fan of S. Park by the way.

i d say it s cold, depressing and full of alcoholics, why not manchester then???? ;)

there is a reason why it was offered to you mate.... it s hell up there, so unless you re getting crazy money. i d pass.

Never heard of the place and have pre-conceived probably wrong ideas about Alaska.
It is probably nowhere near the lifestyle of Florida, but why should it be forever.

If it is a fantastic opportunity to progress your career then take it, fantastic opportunities for Governments only come along once in a lifetime.

What do you do for a living, is it specialised?

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Well being from Manchester, as you allude to, I know cold, am pretty miserable and am a bit of a pisshead myself (as has been noted possibly around our BM). I'd be on between 40 and 50k in dollars, so roughly 30k+ pounds...not crazy money! :(

Suppose you might be right about there being a reason why it has been offered. The only full time jobs available have been in Alaska for a long time now (the ones I have been applying for), and it's apparent that there are 'a few' vacancies and not just one.

Not sure I would up sticks anywhere for 30K unless I was on the run or totally brassic.

My science teacher used to tell our class about his days in Alaska. From what I remember, he concluded that it was wank and he'd never go back again.

However, we always thought he was a boring bastard droning on about osmosis and all that shit, so it'll probably be full of parties and whores and cocaine. From that alone, I'd say go.
