Just been having a look at some old stuff relating to the '99 play-off final, which led me to Joe Royle's entry on Wikipedia! I was just intrigued by the following passage, which has obviously been posted as a wind up, but by whom? Is it a City fan poking fun at the rags, or a rag numpty having a go at us? Its just really confused me!

Anyway, here it is, see what you think! It made me chuckle anyway:

After 11 months out of the game, he accepted the challenge to manage Manchester City in February 1998. When Royle arrived the club was deep in the relegation zone and even though he could not save the club from relegation to Division Two, the next season they were promoted through the play-offs and a year later were promoted to the Premiership. It was said in his book that he was physically attacked by Paulo Wanchope, who was at Manchester City when he was manager. Manchester City only spent one season back in the top division, leading to Royle being dismissed after relegation in May 2001. But, despite this, he is still officially the greatest manager the world has ever seen since Brian Robson.

I'd have thought only Robson himself could have written that, no other football fan would, not even the rags!

You're assuming that "captain marvel" can write! Even if he once could, I'd have thought the years of alcohol abuse have somewhat affected his ability to hold a pen!

But doesn't he spell his name Bryan?

lol, i like royle. if you type in manchester derby you will see that it goes in to great detail of uniteds wins but barely any mention of citys derby wins.

I'm a fan of Big Joe (and his massive head) myself Davy!

People talk about the Sheikh having re-awoken this sleeping giant, but none of this would have been possible without Joe & the boys sticking the defribralator on the heart of the club back in '99, & shocking us back into life when it seemed we were a gonner!

Thank you Mr Royle, your service to the cause is duly noted & much appreciated!

agreed, and he seemed to have a special bond with the fans. his downfall was handling permiership egos imo.

Yeah, he seemed to come unstuck a bit once some of the big name players turned up, but certainly for those 2 seasons as we rose out of Div 2 back to the Premiership, the bond between the players, the management & the fans was something I've never experienced before or since. I doubt there will ever be that sort of rapport again, because it was borne out of a necessity for absolutely everyone to muck in & do what they could to save the club from oblivion!

Much as many outside the club may attempt to paint that period as a shameful one in the clubs history, I look back on it as one of the proudest, because it showed the club & its fans for what we truly are! Loyal!

i agree mate, we need to remember royle did it all with no money to spend at all. we had to do with free transfers and loanees. but he got the players playing with passion as if every game was a playoff or something. we never had true quality (although i really rated kennedy) but we had a fantastic team spirit and yes the support was excellent. the bond between all of us was brilliant and imo when we become this successful team we can all look back on those days as the catapult from the bottom to the top. bare in mind that if we had just abandoned our team we would probably still be down there today!
