John Maddock

Bribery scandal - surely if anyone's to be criticised that should be Meredith, but even then I'd support the Welshman. The real story was about the illegal payments and, quite frankly, City acted no differently to many other clubs at that time. Maley was a reputable man and certainly should not be viewed negatively by City fans. Without him City may not have achieved major success. At that time, some of the directors may have been a little 'free' with the club's money but take a look at any other club at that time.

John Maddock - a very odd period for City but then he wasn't the first person given power by Swales who took actions that mystified many of us. I don't think Maddock personally gained much from his time at City (apart from his salary), I'm not certain others could say the same. Maddock, more than anything else, was a smokescreen - Swales still had the power of course!

I'd take the view that the buck stops with the people in charge Gary, I've no problem adding Meredith to the list though :) Any more ideas yourself?

But the issue is that City were acting no differently than other teams, so why were the "noveau riche" punished and not the teams that saw City as a major threat who had friends on the FA committee investigating? Lewis from Blackburn for example hated the fact that the power was shifting. The system was wrong and City were no different to many other clubs. International players from other clubs changed their evidence - why? The Everton game saw City players dragged into the Everton dressing room and thrown out with cuts and bruises - why wasn't that properly investigated? All very suspicious. Today many Blues talk of City as suffering at the hands of the media, UEFA and others with something to lose. It was the same back then except the northern media and many, similar clubs, supported City and saw the punishments as unfair. Those punishments robbed City of a highly respected manager who was developing a team capable of finding major success in the League as well as the cup.

Someone told me Maddock was interviewed soon after he became Swales's hit-man. He was asked about his favourite football match and answered "beating Leicester 3-1 in the cup final".
Cnut, and a rag cnut to boot.

Always remember the day he sacked Peter Reid. I listened to it on the wireless set. Then i said to the wife "I'm off to bed now love, goodnight!" Never forget that crazy night.

Don't know much about him .
All i remember is him, saying he had a mandate to run the club by Peter Swales .
Was he paper writer before getting his brief spell at City .

Silly me for forgetting Thaksin. Then again, he's a nice guy to play golf with (copyright G Cook) - can you imagine playing a round with Maddock? The **** would have his driver wrapped round your neck as soon as he fluffed his first tee shot ;)

The "Brian Who?" comments were a bit unfair on Horton but Maddock brought that on himself when claiming we had a highly reputable manager lined up. My mates don't call me Statto for nowt though and I think I was the only one out of our match-going lot that had ever heard of him. More shame them as Horton had already made a name for himself at Maine Road about 5 years previously after he allegedly rearranged the door to the visitors dressing room following our late turnaround in the game against Oxford.
The Brian who? comment came from the press.they were ether taking the piss but should be embarrased about it Brian was a well respected player who was in the Luton team that saw us off

Think his actual words were " i have the power to hire and fire"
can remember thinking gulp, that sounds ominous for reidy.(and bfs ellis)
I also remember feeling confused at what was going on at City..not the first time i,d had that feeling and certainly not the last!
