John Stones - 2016/17 performances

Stones was really poor tonight. He can not tackle and often time will not tackle. Needs some education of defending, whats Vinny doing these days? he should be all over stones teaching him.

He's all over the place for that first goal, he starts 2 yards behind the rest of the defence, then lunges forwards foolishly trying to play offside while the rest of the players go in the other direction, leaving him a couple of yards too far up the pitch so there is room for the ball in behind him. He ends up n no mans land. There is plenty of blame to go around for the goal, Willy shouldn't kick it to their player, Fernandinho doesn't do enough to close it down, Sagna should do more to get across his man, but Stones should be there to stop the ball getting across at that height anyway

Bollocks, he's the one facing the ball on the near side, he can't see the other defenders, it's their job to match his run. Although if anyone fucked us there it was Dinho, free cross from his side.

What was he supposed to do, go join the other 2 defenders on the other side of the penalty area? You're really embarrassing yourself here.

I honestly don't know how despite me telling you to look at the clip you can't see it. Willy is at fault for it with a terrible kick out but I can pick holes in Otamendis, Stones and Sagnas defending of what happened after Willy had gifted possession. Otamendi runs off like a dog with a balloon, he does this all the time. This then leaves Stones with two men and if he runs off to mark Mbappe and Falcao scores because Sagna hasn't moved across as he should do then Stones is totally blameless. However Stones doesn't go across and mark Mbappe, he stops, turns to face Falcao and then chooses to do nothing but mark space. The rest is history. How can you look at the goal and tell me that isn't what happens, it's right there for you to see?

Otamendi leaves stones strung out too often, stones was having words with him throughout which is a good sign, hopefully stones develops into someone that can Marshall the back line when they are all over the park and unorganized like we were most of the match tonight

Most of us know, I think, he has errors in him. Hope he learns from them quicker. Still young but needs more aggression in his game.

Otamendi is within 2 yards of Falcao when he scores that header as is Sagna and it's Stones' fault? Fucking seriously? Do you not realise that the 2 lads should stop him scoring that header? Do you not realise they every single fucking lesson you'll ever learn as a defender starts with marking space? If you don't mark space, people take it from you and then you're fucked, because once they have the position you're second favorite to get it back and they have a run on you. Keep watching, you'll learn.

Is that not Otamendi on the near side to the cross? Isn't Stones the right sided CB running backwards and forwards in the middle? I could be wrong, maybe it's Otamendi getting lost then

Look unless my eyes are deceiving me, and if they are I apologise it is Sagna and Stones that are within 2 yards of Falcao when he scores. Otamendi is off on one of his jaunts. On this basis I think it's a case of mistaken identity on your part and you actually agree with me.

As for marking space, space has never scored a goal in over 100 years of football.

Sorry mate got the two mixed up.

You simply can't defend him tonight.

90 mins of utter shite when it came to defending.

There was something off with him and otamendi for the second one. As for the last one, he was shown up.

He simply should not be trusted in big games right now. I'd have Fernando in there ahead of him.

Thank fuck for that, you had me worrying I'd been getting them wrong all game! (wouldn't be the first time)
:) was pissed off with him getting the entire blame for the third when he got abandoned which didn't help, sorry about that. I'm still blaming Sagna for the first, he didn't score the winner ;)

Bollocks. I just finished watching the game again and the only thing he did wrong was the Falcao goal. Everything else he was fine, played some great passes and scored the goal that got us the lead.

Still learning his trade. I imagine there's a few errors left in him before the season is out but can see why Pep will persevere with him.

I agree he shouldn't have been on his own for the third but there was a split second just inside our box when a CB like Bonucci would have whipped the ball off Falcao's toe, Stones seemed to freeze and then Falcao just brushed past him.

Stones got the ball off his toe, that's when your teammates come in, unless you think Bonucci could have teleported up off his arse to clear the ball as well.

I thought he was really good today. Obviously an error for Falcaos goal but made that up with his goal. Apart from that he was very good and clever on the ball and very good defensivly. Otamendi was a fkn mess however.

Whether or not he should have been on his own, he should have recognized that he was on his own and just stood off a yard and slowed Falcao down while the other defenders got back to help. Not dissimilar to Otamendi's mistake against Chelsea when he got too close to Costa and got beaten (although I don't remember anyone being close to getting back to help him out in that case).

This. Last night he was one on one with a vastly experienced, international in-form centre forward who out muscled him. These are the sorts of experiences young defenders have to learn from and there will be more. But he's 22 with 10 years at the top in front of him
