Guardiola: “...if finally we can’t find another solution for somebody to play there (deep midfield) John (Stones) could play there.”

Back to his best. His interception for the second goal was brilliant. Stepped up, two touches and launches the counter attack. Interesting seeing Pep use him in the DM position as well.

Just carrying on from the World Cup and the end of last season......he's the real deal and he will get better.

Captain material IMO.

Wonderful interception and burst of pace and power. Still prone to the occasional eyebrow-raising pass, though, which oddly enough seem to occur when he is under absolutely no pressure at all.

It could be an interesting development. Play like Fern does; don't try anything fancy, win the ball back and give it to the showponies ahead of you.

The build up to the 2nd goal tells us John Stones is back. When he’s off form, he goes extremely passive and backs off relentlessly. To see him defending on the front foot again was fantastic and as soon as he won that ball, I was certain we’d at the very least get a shot from it.

Welcome back John.

Guardiola would be mad to move him to DM. No reason why he couldn't be very good in that position but you pay all that money for one of the few centre backs with the composure and ability to play the way Stones does only to move him somewhere else would be an absolute waste. He is the one who organises the line and the buildup from the back and does it well.

Yeah I don't think he'd do it unless he's got no one else.

Stones is potentially one of the best CB's in the world, the perfect Guardiola defender, he won't move him out of there while he's making good progress to be a stop-gap defensive midfielder unless he absolutely has to.

Completely agree. We should also be focusing on building the Stones/Laporte partnership, not splitting it up.
