Johnstone’s Paint Trophy

Great idea if you really play your u21/EDS team and not u21 first team players.

Brilliant idea, ban any more than 3 players with first team appearances from playing, and those that do, cannot have played more than 30 games for the first team

Great idea from our point of view, good experience for the lads. I'd be pissed off if I was a fan of a lower league club though.

Shit idea, lower league supporters don't always have a lot to dream about but this could take even more of their thunder away from them.

Football League fans are not that interested either in the comp so I doubt anyone will be that vexed. They changed the format a few years ago allowing Conference teams in for a few seasons but then changed it back.

Is this fair on lower league teams?

Competition-wise? No, although I suspect that for the first couple of seasons at least it would be the FL teams who won it anyway. However, it does suggest that more money would be pumped back in in sponsorship and such than most clubs make in prize money so at least it's supporting them financially.

Don't think the lower league teams care about this competition that much so for once its actually a good idea. It might actually help them out financially too, as i'm sure more premier league clubs' fans would go to watch the U21's in proper matches.

I've no doubt financially it will be better, but given the money that top PL teams pump into their 'reserves' I'd imagine the lower league fans can look forward to less trips to Wemberleeee.

Never thought about it that way.

Play the first rounds in the Summer as a pre-season thing, likely to attract bigger crowds rather than midweek in November or similar.

League 2 clubs may only have 6 or 7 senior players under contract pre-season, lots are on a one year job, and if signed early you pay the months severance from the previous 1 year, so they wait until August.
