Julian Alvarez | Signs for City (see main forum)

I'm not sure how familiar you are with City, but if you had to compare him to a current member of our squad, who would it be? Thanks for the info regardless, it's nice to get research beyond TransferSkills9000 on YouTube or whatever.

I don't think there's one that is too similar to Julian, but f I had to choose one it would be the most obvious: Gabriel Jesus. A "smallish" center forward that is versatile enough to play any attacking position.

I do think Julian is more clinical as a finisher and hopefully that bridges the difference between a good serviceable squad memeber as is Jesus, and a future star, which is what I think Julian has the potential of becoming.

The thing with Álvarez is that, at first glance, he doesn't wow you with anything:

-He isn't the fastest guy around, but most times than not, will win a race vs the defender. He has a special knack for stealing the ball off goalkeepers and defenders, as I'm sure you would have seen in some of those youtube videos. It's almost as if rivals don't expect him to be quick enough to get to them but he presses the turbo midrun and nabs an out of the ordinary number of balls from opposing keepers and center backs.

-He also doesn't have the flashiest of dribbling techniques, as I'm sure some of you also might have noticed from the video. It looks kind of clumsy, sometimes it seems like the ball gets too far from him, but the kid never loses control of the ball and always seems to get where he wants to.

-The one thing that does stand out is his accuracy to hit it between the posts. I don't have it at hand but there's a stat out there that shows that the dude has an abnormal rate of shots on target. The keeper might save it, but Julian doesn't send it wide or above. And I don't know if it's still the case, but at some point last season he was the player with the most goals outside the box in the World behind Messi.

Thanks River Plate for all the info. Greet stuff.
I'm salivating at the thought of this player joining City. Part of it, no doubt is the fact that we would be buying somewhat 'under the radar' and at a very reasonable fee.
Given we don't need to be looking for bargains I know that doesn't make much sense, but it would be so nice to be able to shut up the remains of the 'City buying success' lot by bringing in someone like this and him setting the League on fire.

I'd consider sending him to Dortmund on loan next year, both to further his development in European football (Dortmund seem good at bringing on youth) but also as a make way for Haaland!

Nobody needs a to give Dortmund anything more than the release clause, however, if we were sending someone on loan surely Delap would be perfect….sign him on a new deal then send him on a 2 year loan deal

Nobody is sending anybody to Dortmund on loan. It is of no benefit to them.

Their literal model is developing talent to sell on.

This is a surprisingly accurate and fairly complete description of Julian.

Álvarez is used to playing vs teams that defend with a low block. River is the City of Argentina. Everybody parks the bus vs us, even boca.

Gallardo and Guardiola share a lot of the same premises in terms of tactics: suffocating high press and a lot of ball possession. Gallardo might be a bit more direct than Pep, but in general terms they are very similar. Even on the scheme: 4-3-3 with a false 9 and fullbacks that get inside to work as defacto midfielders.

When Julian was rumored to go to United I was worried because they are a machine of stunting players' developments, and I always thought you guys were the best fit for him instead.

No hiring is a guarantee of success (if not, just look at Grealish) but I think this one is as good a get as you guys could have had, outside of getting the Halands and Mbappes of this world. The best player in South America, who happens to fit your style of play as a glove, and extremely cheap for your standards.

The Benfica fans that came on the Dias thread to tell us their thoughts on him turned out to he spot on. I hope you and your pal turn out to be right too and he becomes a quality player for us.

I still kinda wish he was coming in now.

But to look at it another way, if we could have signed a promising Haaland for 20m and left him at Salzburg for 6 months or even a year, would it have turned out to have been a good move?

This could end up being a great bit of business, if it doesn't, a solution will be found for all.

Obviously we are buying potential and Pep loves developing potential , if Alvarez is going to make a success in european football he is coming to the right club , at the right time with the right coach at £15m its not even a risk , the Rags would pay that for a corner flag if we were interested in buying it.

If the reports are true, by the time he comes pep may have 5 months left here. As it stands at least. Won't develop anything, might not even consider him and focus on what he has already. Unless Pep extends, he is one for a post-pep future it would seem.

That’ll do for me, exactly what we’re missing imo.

Cheers for the run down bud.
