I need to recruit a person at work and it can either be a full time apprentice (17 - 19 yr old) or a part time semi retired or retired person that wish they hadn't retired.

So the apprentice would get full training and we would put them through an appropriate qualification. We've had a recent bad experience with an apprentice though wasted 3 months training him for him to just leave.

The older person would come in maybe 4 hours a day do our admin. I've always found older ppl more reliable?

Anyone any experience with either?

Comments appreciated ta

Why can't it be someone who wants to do part time hours who is neither young nor old but somewhere in between?

I think you gave a young person ago and it did'nt work out so why not give the older a go. Sounds like you want to. If you feel both are capable but more chance of reliability with the elder, then why not. They trust you with the decision so go with your gut.

Why not interview some candidates from both then pick someone on merit?

It's more what will fit than who really I suppose. A young person would want to progress and unfortunately if there isn't a position for them in 18 months time then we would have to let them go albeit with some experience and a qualification but an older person could just work with us in the same role as long as they wanted/were able

i work with younger and older blokes at work and if it was my choice i would choose the older blokes everytime, the younger ones all have hair and no wrinkles ,so the ladies aren't interested in me,saying that they aren't interested in me fullstop. :)

Absolutely this. It makes my piss boil that this govt is making people work too long, while kids struggle to get work. Not so much a problem now maybe but it will be in the future, its all backwards if you ask me. I do get it that older persons will almost certainly have a better work ethic and be reliable, but interview some kids and try and pick a good one and give one a break. While there may be no future prospects as you say, it will always be better for that youngster to get future work if they have job experience, so when they decide to move on everyone it will benefit them. Then repeat the process and help another one.

Seriously though anyone who is interested pm me
