that ridiculously high line won us everything domestically and back to back titles with 198 pts,18 then 14 in a row
It was different though, wasn't it?
We had Vincent Kompany organising our backline. We had more communication throughout the team. We had Fernandinho dropping in to fill in as a third CB when needed when he was playing as our defensive midfielder. We had 2 number 8's that pressed high from the front and suffocated teams so they wasn't allowed to counter attack us and exploit our high line.
This season we didn't have a leader at the back, we didn't have Laporte for most of the season. We didn't have two number 8's that pressed the same and suffocated teams into giving the ball away or making a mistake. We all saw this season how it didn't work. We lost 9 times, home and away to Wolves and home and away to Man Utd. What do both of these teams have in common? Pace on the wings and down the middle.
As i have said, if the defence stands in a straight line, one ball over the top or down the sides beats the whole defence. I am not saying i am against a high line at all as i prefer when we squeeze teams in their own half, but it needs to be tweaked. Liverpool play with a high line, but Van Dijk usually drops off 5-10 yards to sweep up anything that comes in behind him. He also has the aerial ability to prevent anything going over the top of the defence and has the recovery speed to cut out any dangerous attacks. City currently don't have that. I just think we have gone down the route of relying on playing the offside trap instead of actually trying to defend.
This is why i think it is imperative that we sign Aouar. We need to sack off Gundo in the number 8 role or deep lying playmaker role alongside Rodri and have one of Aouar, Foden or Bernardo Silva playing in that role so they press the opposition high and force them into making mistakes. Our pressing game needs to be on point next season. Koulibaly and Ake will give us more speed at the back which can only be a good thing for the way we play.
We need to take note of how Liverpool defend. They play a high line, but they don't take as many chances as we do and leave themselves exposed to the counter attack.
