Kalidou Koulibaly

Age isn't a big concern to me.

After 5 years, it means some of the youth CBs have a chance to break through, earliest of them all is Tosin.

The academy has 4 great CBs from what I've read: THB, CJ, Luke, and Finley.
Internal competition for places is what helps drive standards, just look at Sterling's comments about City bringing in new wingers and how it pushed him on even further. The same has happened with Walker, Cancelo comes in and Walker's upped his game again. We're doing the same I think with Zack Steffen to push Ederson. Jesus coming in made Aguero step up and change his game to Pep's demands.

I'm the single biggest advocate for giving academy players a chance, however they have to earn the right and force their way into the team (e.g. Foden). You don't create a space for them by buying a stop gap signing, that's just weird logic.

what's the point of waiting til next week to stump up the exorbitant fee if the fee was the same 3 weeks ago and he'd have been in for the full of whatever our "pre season" will be?

Big difference. Mahrez came from a Leicester side where he was the star player and played in an entirely different, counter attacking system. Hence he struggled adapting to playing majority weeks vs low blocks and having so much to do off and on the ball with linkup play.

Koulibaly's best football came under Sarri's system, which is a budget version of Pep's, if he was good under that system with barely half the quality, I can't imagine him being worse under Pep. Adaptability is something you can factor in but that's where I think it's less important because of his age and experience, in terms of playing our football, the more he plays the quicker he gets used to it anyway.
That all helps absolutely and the fact he speaks better English than 90% of the posters on here will help too but he's still moving to a new country, a different culture and way of life. Age and experience is irrelevant in those circumstances, players can move at 14 and settle quickly, others can be 30+ and not settle at all, it's all about personality and character.

Realistically we should of stumped up the money for Van Dijk but that's in the past. Koulibaly will improve us give the lad a chance. We let Savic go too when we should of kept him too.

How is 29 old for a centre back ffs. Just about to enter his prime as well.
He will be a top signing for us no matter the price, but then again people here thought Otamendi was a warrior and reliable. Time will tell.
