Keir Starmer

He is a safe(acceptable)pair of hands for the real power brokers who run the Nation.

Nothing more.

The polls say different, he is not popular at all. He has a similar rating to Sunak.

Which have been hot air, Starmer has not said he will do anything different.

There is truth in what you say, the Tories only care about power, the Left do care about ideology. What is more honest, a belief in power for powers sake or a belief in power for ideological reasons

The only way i can see this happening is a coalition with the Fib Dems. Our electoral system is broken, the Tories will not want to change it as it suits them as they continually get into power with a minority of the electorate voting for them. I think the last time any party won near 50% of the votes cast was in 1955 when the Tories won 49% of the vote,

If PR came into being then I expect UK politics to fragment, Labour should never contemplate a coalition with the Lib Dems because on economic issues they are miles apart and it is the Economy Stupid. The plus is parties of the true left may gain influence, i live in hope.

I agree totally that his personal ratings are not brilliant - Labour as a party consistently out-perform him in polling. The question is how much this hurts his electability when the opposition are even less desireable. I don't proclaim to know what will happen at an election after months of campaigning, I'm just trying to objectively make sense of his strategy (and just to be clear, not supporting it in doing so).

I also agree with everything you say on PR. Our system is totally broken and I don't currently see any path to it. I think judging by the posts there's about 10 different shades of left wing on this forum alone. Though I'd definitely describe myself as a slightly cynical pragmatist, I allow myself to be ideological in one part of my politics which is that I hope one day a full spectrum of views can be represented in our parliament in a way that truly reflects the interests of the people.
