Keir Starmer

It's worth a watch for many reasons, but seeing Chris Morris deliver Day Today/Brass Eye style rhetoric whilst the chaps next to him remain stony faced is worth the admission fee alone.....

How can you have a 'partnership' with the market? It's like having a partnership with the traffic on the M62. A proper government's job is to regulate the market where it is not working to the advantage of ordinary people.

A partnership with 'working people'. Just words. What does it mean and how would such a partnership be negotiated? I suspect the sort of partnership in mind is one where the boss tells me what to do and I say 'Yes, boss.' I doubt what is in mind is the sort of progressive partnership they have in places like Germany, where workers sit on company boards and a consensus is agreed as to how the company should go forward. That would be way too 'leftie'.

A partnership with allies is just the norm; the only issue is the power relationship in our 'alliances'. In the past, Labour governments (with the honourable exception of Harold Wilson) have been too ready to climb up Uncle Sam's bum.
