Keir Starmer

and demand St. George's day to be a public holiday like the unpatriotic jam man argued for :)

If it's not full on ticker tapes and people standing on podiums wearing the countries gold on their uniforms being 12 gun saluted we are doing it wrong mate :)

I remember our history teacher (just shy of sixty years ago now) distinguishing Americans and British people. He said that US citizens all but worshipped their flag as it was their symbol of unity. British people didn't give a shit if you shined your shoes on the Union Jack. The Queen, he said, was our equivalent to their flag as a symbol of our country.

How far we have fallen. I put it down, ironically, to a loss of that absolute confidence that the English, in particular, had in their country. We, as a people, have gone on the defensive. That confidence has gone, perhaps forever.
Nobody loves to wave a flag like the Americans, but I think it's a curiously British thing to almost be embarrassed by their national flag. Maybe the Germans for obvious reasons?

Every country has a flag and every country waves it, we aren't anything special but according to some people we could be the first country to not have a flag to wave.

Obviously this doesn't mean that Scotland, Wales and the Irish shouldn't wave a flag just anyone who believes themselves to be English/British.

Some of us old farts see the union/England flag as owned by the far right.

That perception will only be changed if we change them both to reflect our country today.

We're supposedly a secular, multi ethnic country and new ones should reflect that rather than our colonial past.

But that's another debate.

Funny how the rhetoric is so high around flags. They’re an irrelevance.
Another distraction in the myre of distractions to prevent us looking at the real issues that face us as a country. Such as parliamentary corruption (on all sides) and the people doing something about it.

We don't need to change them mate we need to just have the flag and accept it/them as what they are, flags that everyone uses to signify unity. It amazes me that as soon as a flag comes out some people get all worked up and feel the need to tell everyone else to not display one.

Rainbow flags, union flags and flags to show an allegiance even to a football club. Remember when the halfwits tried to get our city flag changed because of a boat?

Should all countries change their flags to prevent people from being triggered and upset?

I don't own a flag but if I did own one and decided to bang one up in my front garden it would be an England one and just underneath that one a British one but right at the top would be a City one taking pride of place :)

Absolutely. They spring philosophical debates about if you owned one, which one would you fly highest in your garden.

They need to be 'reclaimed' from the far right.

That may take some time. Sadly, there is still a strong association between passion for the flag and far-right views.

Italy Germany and Japan together with Argentina and a myriad of other countries have got an even bigger problem with their flags, should they change too?

Our flags don't need reclaiming mate, they are not solely in possession of the far right, and never have been.
