EXCLUSIVE: Manchester City eye £30m-rated Premier League defender
MANCHESTER CITY boss Pep Guardiola is eyeing Virgil van Dijk as a replacement for Vincent Kompany.
The Southampton defender has become one of the most-wanted defenders in the country, with his valuation soaring to £30million.
City’s Guardiola wants to sign a central defender in the January transfer window, with skipper Kompany, 30, ruled out for six weeks with his latest problem, a knee ligament injury.
Van Dijk, a centre-back who is comfortable on the ball, is on Guardiola’s radar.
But the 6ft 4in Holland international, 25, has also been strongly linked with Liverpool and Manchester United.
Liverpool have signed so many players from Southampton – Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane – that the joke on Merseyside is that the Saints are now their nursery club.
Van Dijk signed a five-year contract when he moved to Southampton from Celtic last year for £13million.
But it is now clear that, despite that deal, the Saints face a fight to keep him.
