I don't really mind that Walker now gets to rest during international breaks but Southgate leaving him out of the last England squad to just "take a look at" other options, and now not calling him back up this time around because he didn't want to make a change from that seems really unfair on Kyle. Managers need to make tough calls sometimes with their selections, but this whole "not dropping him but dropping him" thing Southgate is trying to do here feels a little distasteful.

To be fair, Southgate always appears respectful and sensitive to players’ feelings.

Barry went from great for England to suddenly not being good enough.

People forget but Milner was suddenly vilified quite a bit for his Euro 2012 appearances.

Stones got picked on even more after signing for City than he did before.

Sterling went from being a great young English talent to even having his inclusion in the squad questioned and only managed to turn this around after calling out the media.

Walker went from being first choice right back at Spurs, ahead of Trippier, to suddenly not being able to get in the England squad ahead of Trippier, and despite being first choice right back for one of the greatest English club sides of all time.
