this could be amusing, hope Shiv stays in for your sake.

What's happened to Simon Jones? Last I heard he was meant to be coming back for the T20 final but I haven't noticed him on any scorecards since, such a shame(like MJ) that a great talent has succumbed to injury.

Hes at Hampshire, played in a few t20s for them but dont think he has featured in any 4 dayers. They play Leicestershire tomorrow in the cb40 so he might feature in that

yeah would like to see him make it back this time, even if its not to england level.

I don't see how England will take 20 wickets a match down under with their current bowling attack though.

Was saying exactly the same all summer when they said Finn was going to go. I think the injury to Onions is going to hit us hard, he was brilliant in the ashes and adds another dimension to our seam attack. We have Anderson who swings it, Broad is now considered our wicket taker but Onions just bowled wicket to wicket like Mcgrath.

I dont rate Finn at all and i think he is going to fail miserably down under. If we go with them 3 and Swann then we are going to have to hope it swings a bit and it turns for Swann because Broad is unpredictable and Finn has proven nothing yet, taking wickets agianst Bangladesh and a poor Pakistan is nothing to rave about.

-- Fri Sep 03, 2010 5:04 pm --

Croft has just gone 44-4

yeah, we don't have a good Harmison in our ranks or a Freddie, least SJ could reverse swing it beautifully.

Got the feeling we'll be chasing 400/500 1st innings deficits and I don't see us having 2 batsmen getting a century each 1st innings, there's no form apart from Trott and we can't rely on him and Prior.

I think we should move Prior up the order and put Collingwood down. Prior has always contributed when he had someone to bat with and Collingwoods form is shocking atm. Add to the fact Colly revels in sticky situations and i think him batting at 7 would suit him. I think if we do have to chase 400-500+ every innings then im afraid we are going to struggle but when we won the ashes back in 2005 we won the toss and batted 1st 4 out of 5 times and the only time we didnt was when we lost at Lords so i think the toss will be vital to us doing well

I'd go even further than that and play 5 bowlers against the Aussies. Prior is a No.6, Broad is a No.7 and Swann is a No.8 so there's no problem with that lineup. Add that to the fact that the Aussie bowling isn't as good as it has been and England's batting will be much better in the sun than recently in the cloud then there's no reason why we can't go out there and be aggressive. Morgan should be dropped; he's not ready for test cricket against the Aussies. The remaining questions are which two out of Colly, Cook and Bell should play and who on earth will be the fifth bowler?!

it's different on the hard, fast wickets down under.

True but look at what the Aussies averaged against Pakistan over here a few months ago. Pakistan have 1 of the best bowling attacks in the world, if they had a top class spinner then they'd have the best and 1 of the best ever. Our batsmen have been out of form for a while, even against Bangladesh most of them struggled to get averages of 50, something that should be acheivable against a poor side.

Also Australias bowling attack is not as strong as it used to be so im not worrying about the batting even though they are in poor form. Johnson is way overrated imo, Siddle is hit and miss, Hilfenhaus and Bollinger are nothing special and they have even had to call up a 19 year old with 6 1st class matches under his belt, so it shows its just not us who are struggling.

-- Fri Sep 03, 2010 6:09 pm --

Also lancs 144-7 Chapple didnt bowl in the 2nd innings so looks like hes injured and Chilton has only just come in at 9 meaning he is also struggling. 24 to win and i think we have 5 overs left

we're not playing here though, we're playing on their grounds where Hauritz, Bollinger and MJ are much more effective, we're just lucky that Lee & Tait aren't ever fit enough anymore. We have Swann, Broad, Jimmy who I think won't be effective, Finn(god), then who?

Colly would play to bowl imo as a medium pacer, though I'd rather try Bell at 5 and Ravi at 6.

I know but what im saying is that we have struggled this summer and so have Australia. We havent played on the pitches Australia have so i wont go and say we wont get 400+ because we have a very good batting line up.

Im all for dropping Colly and bringing Ravi in but i cant see it happening. The selectors seem to have a love affair with him and i dont think he will ever be dropped unless 1 of his legs falls off. Id play:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Prior
Colly
Broad
Swann
Jimmy
Shazhad

I think on those wickets where there is going to be some pace, Shazhad would be perfect. Hes zippy across the wicket and is a genuine pace bowler. Also id stick with Colly because he offers a lot in the field and can bowl. Ravi can also bowl but hes not exactly been in good form at Essex in the 4 day game.
