I've had my laptop 3 months and it came with 3 months free antivirus with Bullguard. When the 3 months free expired I changed to AVG free, and the following day the laptop crashed, further to which all personal data on it was lost. This means xmas photos of the kids amongst other things so I'm absolutely gutted.

Nothing dodgy has been done on the pc thus far so I couldn't even pinpoint what has caused the crash other than changing antivirus.

Anyone know how I might restore what I had on the pc prior to it crashing? Any tips greatly appreciated.

Have you tried a system restore? Seems highly unlikely that installing AVG would result in a loss of data.

If you have avg and bullguard on your laptop and it's not one of these powerful ones it could crash ! Because these two will conflict and fight with each other on it! When ever you get a new desktop or laptop you should uninstall all the bullshit they ram down your throat especially any anti virus software! Use the free one from Microsoft! that's all I've been using for the last 12 months and had no problems!

Your data will never be lost.

It will have just been placed in an area which will allow it to be written over, and as a consequence your files will have gone from their folders.

The only way for your files to have completely gone is if you either use a cleaner on your recycle bin that will overwrite all of your hard drives free space many times over. Or you have filled the drive completely and now have no choice but to overwrite the first data that was saved on there.

You should be able to take it to any decent repair centre and they should be able to recover what is on the drive.

I was hoping that nothing has been lost, but are there any downloads, updates or whatever which might help me find them?

As stated your data will be there until written over. The more the Hard Disk is used the less likely it is that you will get your data back.

There are free data recovery programs, one which I have used is PC File Inspector; available at snapfiles.com http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pcinspector.html

Failing that, a generic PC repair shop is unlikely to retrieve your data , if it has actually gone and it is has not simply been moved into a windows.old folder for example. You will need a data recovery specialist clinic. These are not cheap though. Vensys are based at the Towers Business Park on Wilmslow Road in Didsbury, http://www.vensys.co.uk/ If you do need them, speak to Jamie Done, mention me (Andy) and hopefully he would give discount.

If you want, pm me and I'll try to repair it for you, no charge.
