Packard Bell EN laptop not connecting to internet.

Laptop running Windows 8 and when I check network connection it says limited.

I have googled it and turned hub off/on again plus reset it. I contacted Virgin media who ran some tests and says the issue is with the adapter in the laptop. I tried both wireless and also with Ethernet cable plugged directly into laptop.

Just waiting on reply from Packard Bell but wondering if any Bluemooners had any ideas what might be causing the issue.

I have run a virus scan which came back clear and also checked for Windows updates but came back to say there were no updates.

I can connect to internet using my phone as a hotspot.

Laptop only 11 months old so still under warranty.

Cheers

If it is still fucked call virgin and getbyhem to send you an N adapter.
Ask nice and they will send it free or grab one of amazon, cost a fiver.

Cheers lads.

TCIB - I asked would they send one and they said no as laptop under warranty and down to laptop vendor

Tight counts they dish them out like candy.

Just cooking atm will post a few links to micro usb network adapters for you if others don't do first.
<a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B003MTTJOY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1385833170&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B003MTT ... X110_SY165</a>

Something like this is what you need.

cheers mate - no rush don't burn the dinner lol

If it won't connect wired or wirelessly than you can change the wireless adaptor all you want, it won't make any difference.
When you connect via your phone is the phone using the cell towers or is it connecting via the wi-fi router?
Can your phone connect via the wi-fi at all? If not then it's down to Virgin.
If it's just the laptop then it could be a software issue or it could be hardware.

Hmm i didn't see the bit where he tried wired also, gulp.
You are using the same router to post here now that you usually use for the lappy right ?

Try localhost maybe.
Go to this folder "\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"

there should be one line with ONLY "127.0.0.1 LOCALHOST " in it, do you see that ?
Or are there just comments aka "# 127.0.0.1 LOCALHOST"

If so remove the hash and save the file, open it with admin priv.

You can always reset network adapters etc, like this..

Create a new text file and copy and paste the following.

@Echo off
ipconfig /flushdns
nbtstat -R
netsh int reset all
netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset
sc stop Dhcp
sc start Dhcp
sc stop Dnscache
sc start Dnscache
Exit

Rename the file something like tcpsettings.bat, run as admin.

Thanks for all the help lads.

Turned laptop and hub on this morning and it is working at the moment.

Cheers

Just out of interest did you actually do anything to it?

Not this morning.

Last night turned hub off/on again and also reset. Unplugged the cable and Virgin ran some tests and said not the Hub. Plugged ethernet cable into laptop and still not connected.

After posting on here I disabled then enabled the device.

Was still not connected when I went to bed. Just turned all on this morning and it was working

is that to boost the signal receiver??? if so i want one of those.

see some online, cheers tcib!
It's not a booster as such, it's just the newer of the wireless standards. The previous highest standard was 'G' and before that 'B'. You may see B/G/N on your router/modem and/or your WiFi adaptor which indicates which standards they support.
If your router is only B/G then having an 'N' adaptor in your laptop won't make any difference.
If you need to boost the signal you would need a wireless router such as http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-...=UTF8&qid=1386248668&sr=8-2&keywords=n+router for just £15 which can used in a variety of ways such as extending the wireless range of your existing setup by repeating the wireless signal. You could then put an adaptor such as http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-...UTF8&qid=1386249143&sr=1-1&keywords=n+adapter in your laptop if needed for just £7.

Quick update lads - this has been intermittent now for 4 weeks.

Most of the time it is ok but odd occasion it drops out, for example weekend past just for 15 minutes on Sunday night. Weekend before almost all day Sunday.

I have been on Virgin forum and booked engineer for Saturday afternoon after getting this PM from them.

I have checked your connection and there are a high number of T4 timeouts, which are causing problems.
We will need to arrange an engineer visit to adjust the power levels.

It's basically telling Virgin that it's them and not you.

Missed this thread 1st time round, would have advised you to try your PC on someone else's or a public Wi-Fi to rule out the PC

From what I can make out your cable modem is telling them that it's getting a shite signal from the other end of the line, either a low or distorted signal. Could be the connection, the cable, interference or they have added too many customers to your connection point at the other end (where it should affect other consumers as well).

Had the same problem on one of the house laptops today.did all of the above, no joy. Kindle, iPhone and other laptop no probelm. Taking it back to the factory settings was my last resort but has resolved the problem
