laptop wireless connecting problems

here's the story but please bare with it as i'm not that technical..right,got both the kids at Xmas identical Advent 10 inch note/net book or what ever you call them,on purchase i took them home and tuned both in to our sky wireless router to which i did with no problems and both been running fine ever since,but my lad had his 360 and laptop confiscated for bad behaviour for 7 days.On the 7Th day he got them back but unable to connect to the router whilst my daughters is still running fine,Ive run the windows diagnostic problems thingy on it where it pops up a window and i click on the right hand one for wireless then click next,i then select my sky router shown in the new box and click next,it then checks connectivity.It then tells me in a new box that there might be a problem with my router which there is not because I'm using as well as my lads xbox live.Has any of you computer geniuses got a clue where to go next Ive even tried to restore it back a couple of weeks..THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT IS ITS DOING MY SWEED IN
 
Bit more info please.

First thought is possible firewall blocking the net. Did the netbooks come with McAffee or Norton Security. If so that may be the problem.

If not, click the Windows start button > click Network > then on the toolbar click Network and Sharing Center > on the Tasks Options Column (left side of screen) click manage wireless networks > you should then see what wireless networks the pc can pick up. Highlight your router and right click then choose properties. You will see two tabs, click the security tab and check you have the right security key .

If that is set corrrectly and you still dont connect let me know the exact error message and I'll get back to you.

just made my lad bring his laptop down stairs so we could go through the instructions and as he came down stairs having just turned the thing on it connected to the router without doing anything to as for the internet security i installed Avast and malwarebytes Anti malware.Its done my head in for days as i have re-inputed the network keys and run diognostic checks.You watch the dam thing wont connect tomorrow but we will see.
 
Okay, it may be that the option to connect automatically and save the network are not checked. Restart the machine and if the settings are saved it should just connect itself.

When you get it connected again check the signal strength in your son's room. Stuff like mobiles or cordless phones will affect the signal.

still not working, i think to start i will take it round to the wifes aunties where they have connected before whilst staying over..

The network is working fine and the laptop connects intermittantly, possibly a faulty wifi card. Trip to repair shop me thinks.

found this on a forum and i havent got a clue waht it means as im wondering if you cant connect then how do you down load,so any ideas anyone what this means cheers


yep I got a advent 4211 this week to replace my old ibm.

its great, but the wireless is terrible. just keeps dropping off every few mins. it makes it unusable.

If you search online there are hundreds of people with the same problem, so I am amazed this is being taken more seriously.

I tried flashing the bios to 1.09, still had the same problem.

I tried update the drivers via the manufacturers website, still had the same problem.

But I managed to fix mine today and has worked faultlessly all day long, has not dropped off wifi since I done this.

Run windows update, select CUSTOM, then install both the ms realtec drivers windows offers, reboot and it fixes it. Don't know why these drivers fix it and the manufacturers don't, but worked for me.

Make sure do custom and not express ms update as it wont suggest them as they optionals.

I was also getting terrible packet loss on pings with the supplied drivers, over 1000ms to yahoo no matter when I did it and internal ones were bad. now they only 100ms max so shows the supplied drivers and messed up.

From what you found the forum it looks like updated drivers will do the trick.

If you've got a router with ethernet ports connect the netbook to it by the cable (if you haven't got an ethernet cable they are about £2 for a 2m). Don't got to maplin or PC World as they charge a fortune for cables.

Then do start > Programs > Windows Updates

When the page loads you will get two options, choose custom > next page look at the left column and select hardware updates . If the wireless driver is an option add that to the updates then click review and install updates.

If the forum post is correct that will solve your prob.

yipee its working....................holds his breath and waits.........yes no shouts from upstairs complainig its not on,hope it stays cheers anyway
