Here there and everywhere
My laptop has suddenly decided its a non starter, all I am getting is the Microsoft green bars then a blue flash, then a message with options for safe start etc, them back to the green bars and blue flash, is it ready for the bin or have any of you any ideas how to fix it?

Well try http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd before anything drastic.

Could just be corrupted startup files so a reinstall of the os may do it.

Just see what hirens tools say first.

Is this a laptop clinic TCIB?
I also have an Acer, but the fault with mine is it keeps turning itself off
for no reason......or so i thought.......I have got a habit of picking it up
with one hand, and holding it like a letter(if that makes sense),and it will
show a blue screen with a load of white text(this may as well be in Greek, for
all i know about computers) then re-start as if nothing has happened
Any thoughts?

It sounds like a cooling problem, do you keep the vents clear when using lappy ?

Many stick it on their lap in bed and that is the worse things for them.

sounds like a hdd related issue
the "greek" is called bluescreen, most of it is not that interesting, exept the last part where the error code comes into play.
It can help you identify the source of the error, nah, you dont have to study computers for that, just use google :)
sum "better" vendors *cough* ibm *cough* use systems to stop the hdd while the laptop is beeing moved, thus preventing it from killing the hdd.
Id simply suggest to not move it the way you are used to, as it tends to "swing" the laptop around which isnt that good for a working hdd, also its notthat good for your display :)

You could be right TCIB,sometimes it get very hot and noisy,i try to keep it cool but it still dose it,can anything be done and can you recommend anywhere i can take it?

Best bet is buy a cooling tray for it and try not to have 10 apps running at once.

Beyond that not much mate.

My laptop gets excruciatingly hot TCIB. These "cooling trays" you speak of.. you recommend and/or do I just need to clear the fan inside the laptop itself?

sounds like a clogged fan/cooler
these cooler trays arent bad, but not a cure for the problem
if you are technically adept id suggest taking it apart and cleaning the fan/cooler first

Cheers for the link guy, thing is I have no idea what to do with the page it leads to, am I supposed to download the boot CD on another laptop and then put the CD in mine??

Yep, that's what you'll have to do. Download the zip file, extract it to whatever laptop desktop you're using, then use cd burning software to burn the .iso file to cd. I recommend CDBurnerXP (free) as per http://www.hirensbootcd.org/burning. The boot cd download is also available at this site.
For what it's worth, after the event, I always keep a small operating system on USB stick for just such emergencies. I use slax (linux), but there are others. That way if your OS ever goes doolally on you you've still got an OS, and internet connectivity (plus a mobile OS you can use on other computers, such as work).
I just had a look at what is included on Hiren's boot cd, and I see it has ComboFix. Can really recommend this tool. Disable your antivirus before using. and hopefully you still have internet connectivity, as it will try to download the Windows recovery console if you don't have it already installed. Got me out of a nasty situation with trojans etc, and saved me a reinstall. Serve me right for downloading every damn thing I've got off of Pirate Bay! Mind you this tool is more for infections and it sounds like yours isn't. Could also try Windows Repair from Tweaking.com (free). This is more likely to sort out the sort of problems you may have.

With regards to cooling,

I work in a PC repair shop and you don't have to take it apart, just look underneath the laptop for the largest vent where the CPU cooler will be and just put the hoover nozzle over it, keep running it across it so it picks up all the crap.

If you have an electric air pump you could use that as well to blow out the crap.

Once you have done that then just use it on a laptop cooling pad.

As for the original post,
Do you have the original windows disc?

I would say put that in and boot into it, from there you can repair your windows. It won't delete any of your files but just repair the OS if it can.
