Recollections may differ but this thread has brought back some fantastic memories.
There was only 2-3k max there I was there as a 15 year old shitting myself as Newcastle brown ale bottles rained down on us ended up on the pitch went in the Newcastle paddock and was looked after by some kind goerdies if I remember right there was a few rangers there helping outThat's how I remember it, when the Geordies came into our section loads of us were just forced out of the ground, sheer numbers overwhelmed us. No idea how many blues were there but I would say a lot less than 10k.
After the match they tried to roll our minibus over, great day out though.
Yes me and my mate were also down the side that afternoon,he was from West Gorton near the Wellington pub.It was. I was by the dugout.
I was there as an 8 year old with my dad. We ended up on the pitch and my dad dug up a small bit of turf. When we got home he put it in our front garden in Kingswood Road Fallowfield. When I’m in the area I drive past my old house and it all comes flooding back. Those were the days my friend as Mary Hopkins would have said/sung.Other than Cup finals finals/semis, it has to be Newcastle 1968. Estimated around 26000 as I recall. I was just glad we got there really early!
We took over most of the ground that day, including the pitch at the end of the match.
First police escort I ever saw that day. Was grateful for it (until we had to break off from it to get to our car). You could spot a City fan a mile off, freezing day so we all had coats on, Geordies in short sleeved shirtsThere was only 2-3k max there I was there as a 15 year old shitting myself as Newcastle brown ale bottles rained down on us ended up on the pitch went in the Newcastle paddock and was looked after by some kind goerdies if I remember right there was a few rangers there helping out
Bristol City and Coventry as wellSome big, turn outs that season for league games.
Leicester first game and West Brom deserves a mention too.
A great day too. Paul Power and the late equaliser.Yes me and my mate were also down the side that afternoon,he was from West Gorton near the Wellington pub.
Someone else reckoned there were only 3/4000 City fans there that day.
I checked the attendance and it was 45,300 in total.
So by that reckoning it was 42,000 Geordies and 3,300 City fans.
It would be interesting if someone could confirm the official number of travelling City fans there at that match.
Thats the one1987
On a similar theme, everyone cites the 67-68 title win as our biggest away following, and yet the match attendance was supposedly almost 15,000 higher for the FA Cup tie the following season.Someone else reckoned there were only 3/4000 City fans there that day.
