Last Film You Saw

need a bit of help on 3 billboards - does it have any gory/umsuitable scenes in it?
No. The subject matter is pretty harsh, and there's one fairly unhappy scene involving a building on fire.

It's got a slightly dark humorous edge to it that passed me by at first - I gave up after twenty minutes before giving it another shot. It's really very engrossing, witty, tense and moving. Right between an 8 or 9 out of ten for me. Maybe just a little contrived or predictable at points, but the acting and dialogue are perfect.

Mission Impossible Fallout: Uhhh. Pretty flawless. Best Hollywood action film since Casino Royale, I reckon.

The Badabook: Another one that I am glad I came back to after giving up 20 minutes in first time around. Things that bothered me started to make sense. Mother and child seemed a bit annoying, maybe a little 'off'. I put it down to bad acting and direction but.... well, yeah. They are just a bit annoying, and just a bit off, and it's intentional. Scary and creepy, great effects and art direction.

Hereditory: I'm on my third try, and I've made it just over an hour in. Damn. I'm not 'scared'... but it's grim dark. Very, very grim indeed. So dark... I am getting scared thinking about it. Really strong acting and direction - no schlock horror here, you could mistake it for a very high quality drama made for purists.

Mandy: Got tired, only an hour in. Trippy and wierd rather than scary. But yeah. Creepy, and shocking. Must finish.

Suspiria (2018). Gave up after five minutes, thought I should watch the original. Went back, for the Thom Yorke soundtrack but gave up because I need better quality audio - web rips are HORRIBLE! Supposedly the movie is very overwrought and pretentious. As a very overwrought and pretentious person, I am looking forward to it.

Leave No Trace: Was expecting a taught thriller. Nope. It's a hopelessly honest, insightful and well made drama that asks questions big and small. Who we are, who we need to be, how we are allowed to live, and why. And how we are bonded together, and what that can mean. The film itself seems fairly unassuming, and could just as easily pass you by as shake your foundations. Personally - I needed a day off afterwards.

Spider Man Homecoming: Easily one of my favourite Marvel movies - although the second half isn't as fresh as the first. Fun and relatable, without being too clumsy.

I'm pretty sure I watched Manchester By The Sea again, and I STILL couldn't tell you a damned thing that happened apart, from Casey Affleck is very sad and very unhappy and everyone else knows it.

Also The Incredibles 2: A totally satisfying sequel.

First Man: Extremely claustrophobic. Believable in every regard. Very masculilne without being butch. Dunno if I 'liked' it but it sure was engrossing and very high quality stuff.

Law Abiding Citizen. Sod every one of this forum who ever recommended this film. You all have very serious issues and probably need years of therapy. Nah, but honestly - a bit too obvious in how it set itself up, and very very nasty right from the get go. Not my kind of thing.

Solo: A Star Wars Story. Ahhh. You can tell when the shitty producers got cold feet and parachuted in Ron Howard to make everything nice and bland. I mean, what about that battle scene? It's maybe the best in Star Wars history. And then they just get all boring and plastic. I don't know how much of it got reshot, but nearly all the dialogue and banter we ended up with was totally forgettable. Still, I thought it was pretty enjoyable.

American Animals. Wasn't quite sold on the format but it was a bit of a riot, without pulling the punches in just how awful, damaging, and stupid most crime is.

Ok this is the last one (I'm doing this so I don't forget what I've been watching)

Bad Times At The El Royale: It's about what I expected from a thriller done by the same people as The Cabin In The Woods. Very tricksy and pretty taught stuff with just the right amount of paranoid conspiracy.

Deadpool 2: Think I liked it more than the first one. Had a bit of a wider scope, possibly slightly more deranged, jokes were better. I still think it's odd that everyone gives Ryan Reynolds a pass for basically doing Jim Carrey in a superhero outfit.

Black Klansmann: ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz.

Thingybobs. Black Panther. First half an hour, good. Rest - zzzzzzzzz.

That Mexican Disney thing. Forgettable, a bit ponderous, dreary. How can you make death so lifeless?

Avengers 2: Liked it, may even finish it one day.

You Were Never Really Here. Now you see, listen here. If you want to watch a film about taking violent revenge on paedophiles, it's this one, not your Gerard Butler starring, neo-Michael Winner / Taken (but without the plausibility) rip off.

Edge Of Tommorow. Still an absolute winner from start to finish. Primo big-budget sci-fi.

Annihilation: Not quite as good as I expected from the Ex Machina director. It's Stalker, but a bit more modern, a bit more obviously Sci-Fi (as opposed to purely psychological). And with Nat Portman. Defo a potential stoner classic.

Sorry I Bothered You: Apparently this is really good. It's certainly off-beat and supposedly gets much better in the second hour. I'm pretty sure I switched off at exactly wrong moment.

Yeah, and I am sorry if you bothered to read all this. It's just me trying to make an effort to remember stuff I've watched. If you've made it all this way, you probably like indie/arty/creative/thoughtful/psychological sci-fi and/or horror, So please consider watching one of Justin Benson/Aaron Moorhead's ever-so-slightly schizo paranomal conspiracy sci-fi horror thrillers...

Resolution
(Guys in a cabin get freaked out) or The Endless (Ex-Cult members return to visit old friends - especially recommended to anyone who understood Primer, or who, like me, just wished they did)

Disobedience. I primarily went to see it because I have only had fleeting experience of an orthodox Jewish lifestyle, and just wanted to be a bit nosey (no pun intended). It is certainy worth going to see, although it is one of those slightly frustrating films where, towards the end, you think it is over, and it isn't. In terms of enjoyment, 7.5 / 10 for me.
