Last Maine Road Derby

Only very slight downside of that fantastic day is the dreadful top, le coq really didn’t do us many favours :-/

As someone who became a season ticket holder as a young fan in the early 90’s, this was easily my favourite ever game at Maine Road. I suppose their isn’t really much choice though to be honest! The 5-2 vs Spurs, 3-3 with Newcastle, and a couple of the big wins we had on our way to promotion would be the only main contenders.

I wasn’t old enough to recall the 5-1 so the idea of beating United, or even getting a draw, seemed like fantasy to me. When I was in high school United won the league in 4 of the 5 years and we were relegated twice. It wasn’t until I was 18 that we beat them for the first time with me being of an age to see it with my own eyes and soak it all in.

The atmosphere in the game was incredible and is matched only by the Hamburg ‘09 and Liverpool ‘19 games at the Etihad. The outpouring of relief and emotion at the final whistle was something I’ll always remember as well. This had been a game the supporters really wanted to win more than any other with it being the last ever derby at Maine Road, defeat was not an option and it just felt so important that we won the game to help lay some ghosts to rest.

The United fans in college on the Monday had the biggest slapped arse looks I’d ever seen on them at that point. It was definitely my first glimpse into how they would react to City success in the future.

My first match. Unreal atmosphere. Was behind united dugout. Fergie was furious! Get a class autographed panoramic photo of the day from club shop some time later and can even see our heads in the crowd
