Law proposed to overturn fixed parliament act

It’s a difficult one for me. On the one hand you can have a government calling an election at a good time for them, giving them an unfair advantage.

But then though, it was a bit pathetic and an issue to see Labour refusing an election at periods last year, because they knew they would lose, despite the fact the country was stuck in the mud over Brexit.

The former will likely happen much more than the latter so I say keep the Act as it is.

Labour refused an election that could lead to a no-deal Brexit. I'm not quite sure how they got conned into having one anyway (Libdems misled Corbyn?), but seeing that Corbyn's fan club were targeting Tory seats rather than defend Labour-held seats, I don't think they knew they would lose.

And had they known the verminous Tories would end up breaking international law to renege on the deal that was being presented to the electorate, they would/should have kept Johnson on the hook.

They were doing it as they were behind in the polls and the more the Tories went on the worst it would be for them. I was only using it as an example, both sides were playing the game and the Tories change the law to suit themselves, whenever they seemingly want.

Get rid, it was a stupid of legislation in the first place brought in for all the wrong reasons. It was brought into ensure stability in the coalition government but it means we can have dead duck parliaments. If a majority of only small and that majority is overturned we end up being governed by a minority until the 5 years have ended.

It is a misnomer as well that a Government can call an election when it wants, they cant, they have to seek approval from the Queen as well, so whilst we are at it get rid of her as well.

The Legislature should have the power to decide on when an election is called at the instigation of the Executive or LOTO. If LOTO wins a vote of no confidence then the Executive should bring forward a plan for an election to the legislature and then they should decide. If the Executive decide they want to call an election again it should go in front of the Legislature for approval
