Le Tour de France 2016

Froomey's just amazing isn't he.

Was told by two people at work today that they "couldn't warm to him". I have no idea why, seems to be the British way to despise one of our own who's exceptionally good at something like Murray and Froome.
If he was Armstrong he'd have ran the rest of the stage and won it....

Prior to the Vuelta in 2011 Froome hadn't finished near the top 20 in any Grand Tours, and all of a sudden he's the best GC rider and have been for five years, he's stronger uphill than Quintana and Contador who are specialists and equal to Martin, Cancellara in the TT. Unbelievable what a new team means. It reminds me of a certain someone..

Playing Devil's Advocate....

He was 23 before 2011. How many cyclists at that age, while at poor teams, finished in a top 20 in a GT? Not to mention that he had little experience of riding in a peleton in Europe. It's all well and good pushing out a high number of watts but I would think riding in a peleton with 100 plus other riders is not straightforward. Especially, as he came to Europe at an age when his contemporaries had significantly more experience of riding in a peleton.

I don't understand why people don't like him as much as Wiggins. Personally, I have always found Wiggins to be arrogant, humourless and pretentious. Great cyclist but it's amazing how popular you can become by having a student haircut and a liking for Paul Weller.

^^bang on about Wiggins, it always appeared to be about his fucking haircut and that shite group.

Froome appears to suffer from the same thing as Murray, he just gives interviews where he tells it how it is then moves on, which appears to make them 'miserable' to the great British public. Maybe they both need to start wearing Joy Division or the Velvet Underground t-shirts and starting each interview with a Chris Rock routine!

I am a Wiggo fanboy, always liked him and going from individual 4km pursuit gold to TdF winner is like a 400m star winning the marathon, an amazing achievement and shows his ability, he has won just about everything there is to win on a bike, track Olympic gold, TT Olympic gold, team pursuit Olympic gold, World TT champ, TdF winner and all done being a moody miserable **** at times, but thats part of why I liked him (and why I like Murray). They get on with it and win, no time for smiling, joking or being nice, thats not their job.

Froome suffers from Lennox Lewis syndrome more than Murray syndrome for me, in that he is seen as not being British really, more than his personality, he is always nice, quite engaging and seems to have time for the camera and interviews in comparison to someone like Wiggo and Murray in any case.

As for his rapid rise to success, on top of what Manc in London wrote, Froome suffered from Bilharzia, a spore infection that he might have had for years before its detection, once cleared of that he took another huge step to becoming the world's best GT rider, he became consistent in a way he'd never been before, where he'd only shown flashes of brilliance previous to its discovery. Nobody wants to give him credit for what he has done and would rather blame PEDs, blood doping or even mechanical doping in some cases. This despite him releasing his data (something other GT winners havent done - and there have been dodgier winners of GTs than Froome, like Nibali and Horner in recent years) and under going his own testing to prove his innocence. The data he provided was only slightly improved on the data he provided years before when part of the UCI development program and matched up with what he was producing in his TdF win in 2015, it silenced many doubters but they had done their jobs by then, thrown enough shit and bollocks his way, that the French fans saw it that they should throw piss at him, boo him, insult him and punch his team mates, it made me warm to Froome all the more, no other rider had or has been subjected to such vitriol without ever failing a test or having someone blow the whistle on them, in fact many who have been banned for drugs have had far better receptions. Added to this, no amount of PEDs or blood doping of any kind, could make him decend the other day like he did, big balls (rested on the frame to pedal) and technique earnt him that gap. He might be doping, the whole peloton might be doping, the whole of the Olympic games could be littered with people on PEDs but until they are caught they should get the benefit of the doubt and doubters should shut the fuck up IMO.

Laat paragraph is spot on, it only strengthens my liking for him.

Weird how the French hate Froome so much as an unproven doper, yet there are riders like Contador who was proven to be doping and actually had to serve a two year ban, but he doesn't get any stick at all! How you can boo someone on the podium at an event like that is beyond me.

Is anyone looking at heading over to Paris for the last stage? My dad and I are considering it, although what with the security situation over there at the minute it's not looking likely as that could be a prime target...

Whilst Contador was convicted, what he was done for was a bit of a joke (the levels found were minuscule) and it was probably that he was part of an Astana team where he was just about the only member not to be done for doping and the UCI were out to get him. However, you are right, Contador is still much loved and not only in Spain. He isnt as bad as someone like Horner though, who prior to the 2013 Vuelta his best GT performance was 9th and yet he won it at the age of 42, makes Froome look cleaner than Daz whites that does!!

My dislike of Contador is not so much about his doping but for when he rode off when Schleck's chain came off right next to him some years ago.

Another top sprint from Cav, won it with ease. He's been streets ahead of the sprinters in this years tour.
