Learned or Learnt?

It constantly annoys me when people say "learnt!". It has to be "I learned" What do you use?

Either is OK as I understand it. It's just that the 't' ending is an older usage but both mean the same, i.e. past tense.

Learned sounds very American to me, I'd always use learnt, just like I'd always use spelt not spelled.

Learnt sounds better to me.

...and "spelled" sounds childish to my ears.

Also, 'learned' (learn-ed) is a different word really, meaning knowledgeable.

Learnt i use when i did learn something but have now forgot it, if i learned it i still know it.
