Look, I hate losing. In fact, I really, really hate losing. I was a miserable human being after the Boro, Bolton, Tottenham, West Brom, and especially the Brighton Carling Cup matches. My wife tends to avoid me when City end up on the wrong end of a score line.

And, yes, it's frustrating that despite a bunch of significant additions to the roster, the fans are stuck watching a product on the pitch that looks significantly worse than last season.

However, once I realized that a special season of Champions League contention and maybe a Carling Cup wouldn't be happening, it's made it easier for me to embrace a transition season.

Mark Hughes knows how to manage. The years he spent at Blackburn testify to that. Even if you take into account ego management, it's easier to manage better talent -- not more difficult.

The problem is that Hughes hasn't been able to make his mark on the roster yet. Think about it: Jô was forced on him by the old regime. He brought in a couple of CBs (Ben-Haim and Berti) as relatively cheap cover. But in terms of the Starting XI, who have been the most consistently solid performers for City this season?

Ireland, Kompany, Wright-Phillips, Robinho, and Zabaleta

What do all except Ireland have in common? They were August acquisitions by Hughes. (And Hughes can be credited for nixing the sale of Ireland in the preseason.)

City aren't going down this season. So let Hughes bring in some quality players this month who he knows can thrive in his system. City probably will finish in the top half of the table again -- possibly even pip a UEFA Cup spot again.

Bridge is a start. Let's see what else he can do. If the Blues are back in the drop zone in February, then consider making a change. But realize that making a change right now would seriously push back the club's timeline for Champions League football. The groundwork for transfer deals typically is laid well in advance, and City are going to have a whale of a time convincing quality players to come to the club right now if there's no manager.

So stick it out and have some patience. We really don't have any other option at this point.

You were miserable after the Sunderland game? Jeez, you've got it bad! We won that one 3-0; the return of the prodigal son (SWP)?

Yeah, I typed the wrong club from the North East. I caught that right after I sent it live and edited it, but I guess you read it in the meantime.

File that under evidence of the importance of proofreading.

but things are getting worse not better. How much do we give him to get it right. He's spent a fortune already and it's not getting any better.
I agree that we should let him have the rest of the season, but I don't fancy the relegation battle ahead.

Cue the "preview" button. A marvellous tool. Trust me, I know!

city arnt going down this season, we said that at stoke ipswich etc etc, sorry mh does not wash with me, maybe you are prepared to gamble on the future of our club but ive seen it to many times, pompey is another tester for us 'two clubs in freefall' i'm certainly not holding my breath here not even for a point, hopfully the town jester would have collected his p45 for this one and things might just be different than i predict

And the guys he has bought have been quality.

Prior to Thursday, we had seen a grand total of about 10 hours of Hughes with the new owners' financial clout, and that already delivered a world-class player currently second in the Premier League in goal scoring.

He's already brought in a good LB in Bridge. Let's wait and see what he does about CB, ST, CM, and possibly GK.

No the people that say give him time make out that the club and team where on its knees before he arrived, we finished 9th last year for god sake(and but for a very odd offside goal that was allowed for some reason we would have finished above his club), we got to the QF of one of the cups. This year we are 13th and have gone out of both cup comps at the first try and both times to teams in lower leagues than us and teams that where struggling for form. This team is leaderless, both on and off the field, sure we can bring in new players, but that doesn't solve the issues with the coaching staff showing leadership from the sidelines which anyone that watched the game today would see is a major issue.

Can't find any mention of Sunderland me!

Let's hear it for revisionism!

(It was there -- I edited it while he was writing that post. He was correct in making light of my mistake.)

Simple question... how have we actually got worse (even worse than the second half of last season!!!) with the same squad of players plus £80 million of talent added to it?

We are that bad, I'm telling you now, we could get relegated this season :-(

Yeah its a popular game on here - usually preceded by some of the following phrases

"Let the man build his team"

"Hughes needs time to put his stamp on the squad"

"Leave Hughes alone- its really Sven's fault"

I seriously think we need 9 new players, not including Wayne Bridge

Experienced GK for competition with Joe Hart
2 Centre Backs
2 Midfielders(1 holding and 1 box to box)
1 RW for cover
1 LW for cover
2 strikers

Then we can get rid of Ball,Ben Haim,Hamann,Fernandes,Vassell,Benjani and Evans.

That's the frustrating thing. I chalk it up to either inflexibility on Hughes's part as far as making better use of the players available to him, bad chemistry, or just bad luck.

Though if you think about it, this is pretty much a continuation of the form we saw under SGE after the torrid first couple of months. If you averaged the points per match last season beginning with the match at Stamford Bridge, I'll bet it's pretty similar to what we've seen this season.

It's slightly worse under MH. But as I say, he's added to last years squad.

Then it's a good job we've got money - 9 new players ffs we came 9th last year.
