Let's talk about corners

Used to know a German bloke called Gerd who loved ‘em
During the 16/17 season the average conversion rate from corners in the Pl was 5%. We were bottom on 3%, wba were top on 10%. Given how small are team is, it’s not that surprising that we’re below average and perhaps we should be better. But what’s also clear is that corners just aren’t that big a threat unless we field a team of lumbering giants like wba

Once again, the first rule with corners is that they MUST always be inswinging.

Just to underline the point, Kev from the left Merlin from the right for us.

It is especially important when there is a real lack of height with your attackers as the defence can easily cope with only one or two tall players if they have only to play the outswingers.

The fundamental logic is that a ball " leaving " the danger area is just that. Whereas one coming into danger only needs a touch from ANY player to create mayhem & a potential scoring opportunity.

Of course the odd one should be short or long but the chance of success is limited.

hang on hang on ,weve scored 100+ goals this season and the op wants us to go out and swap our players for fucking huge monsters so we can score from a corner, your post shows a complete lack of knowledge about our players strengths and weaknesses ,pep bangs on about our physicality all the time, don't you listen, you've outed yourself as a know fuck all.

Maybe we should get Andy Hinchcliffe in as a corner taking coach? After our promotion season with Machin he seemed to have a run of dropping balls at the far post for Gleghorn or White to nod in. IIRC our first goal of the season away at dipperpool was scored by Gleghorn from a Hinchy corner.
They can’t afford me ;-)

Don't agree with that at all.

In about 2014/15/16, Atletico Madrid were scoring at a rate of 1 goal every 10.4 corners. The average was about 5x worse.

But that Atletico team only had 3 players over 6ft in their corner routines - Godin, Miranda, Mandzukic.

You don't actually need giants to score from corners, it's more about individual quality in the air, routines and delivery. And I think it is genuinely one of the most underutilised parts of the game - probably because a lot of people, like you and a few others, think scoring from corners is only for people like Tony Pulis.

I think the biggest issue is simply time. How much time could Guardiola give to a specialist corner coach to make us score more often? What else could the players be getting taught or coached when they were learning that stuff and is it more beneficial?

Maybe when we get into later years with Pep and the players know everything he does, there'll be more time to allocate to stuff like corners or set pieces.

I've always it would be good for about 6 or 7 players to line up along the edge of the 18yard box and as soon as the corner comes in they leg it into the box to ATTACK the ball at speed. The defenders would be a bit puzzled.
