Liam Neeson

He was talking about how a serious event had affected him, and how he considered finding someone who, in his view, represented the attacker (or maybe in his mind hoping would be the attacker), and wishing for a reason to be presented so that he could kill them. It's not about randomly choosing a certain type of person, it's about his state of mind.

Your analogy obviously wouldn't work as a response in this way unless you were already inclined to commit such a terrible act, so no.

Right, so...
He was talking about how a serious event had affected him
Okay, so-oo, where was this? NI, GB, LA...? Not exactly clear, eh? And I daresay, there weren't many Black neighbourhoods in NI, at the time!

...and how he considered finding someone who...
No, not "someone", ANY Black man (or bast*rd to be correct)!

...represented the attacker...
ANY Black man, yes...

(or maybe in his mind hoping would be the attacker)
Yes, some RANDOM Black dude, yes...

...and wishing for a reason to be presented so that he could kill them...
A 'look' his way should be "reason" enough, no? What "reason" was he expecting from a RANDOM Black man...?

It's not about randomly choosing a certain type of person...
And this is where your own post contradicts you. It's EXACTLY that AND he had all the excuse in the world to pick any Black man, but in his own words, didn't.

What, let's call it 10 days standing around a Black neighbourhood and saw NO opportunity??

...it's about his state of mind

Just... think about that for a second! Who spends 10 days going out of his mind with anger, not to act upon it??

He could have chosen a business man, a college kid, a dealer, but none took his fancy!!

Come on...

Goodnight, fella, I'm not biting.

I guess it depends on what you can and can't forgive.

Some people can't forgive somebody thinking about carrying out a racist attack in any circumstance, other people can forgive him given the length of time that's passed and helped by the fact that he didn't actually carry it out and has spoken about it which normally indicates a lot of contrition and that he's a changed person. Personally I can forgive him but maybe I would have been less inclined to do so if I was somebody of the targeted race. What I absolutely cannot forgive is somebody who goes out for a curry and says they're going for a Pakistani.

Makes you wonder whether any famous person is one anecdote from oblivion. In the scramble to stay famous, they’ll prostitute more and more of their personal lives. Eventually they’re going to recount something the wider population finds distasteful, whilst in turn giving the public an opportunity to be unbearably self-righteous.

We’ve all had weird, fucked up thoughts. Anyone who condems that suggestion is a hypocrite and whoever denies it, a liar.

I think Neeson’s getting unfairly criticised for being honest about his unfortunate past and recanting. Whatever you might think about what he wanted to do a generation ago, it has to be better for our society that he no longer holds those thoughts - and condemns them.

I do believe our society has become much less forgiving over the last few decades, which is highly regrettable.

He didn't just have a fucked up thought though did he? He actively walked the streets for a week with a weapon waiting to beat the first black guy who looked at him funny to death. There is a massive difference between having a fucked up thought and choosing to enact it.

Obviously he and his would be victim were lucky the opportunity never presented itself and he cooled down and thought better about his actions but I still think this was a very fucked up thing to admit to and he should not be surprised a few eye brows have been raised after his confession.

Great post. I do find the general appetite amongst the public and media to pounce on what they perceive to be someone's misdemeanours like a pack of wolves to be more than a bit disconcerting. "Let him without sin cast the first stone" is springing to mind an awful lot these days.

He’s recanted and nobody got hurt. Like I said, our society being less forgiving is hugely regrettable.
