Apparently they are £800 million in debt with 26 La Liga, 30 Copa Del Rey, 5 European Cups, 4 UEFA Cups, 5 Super Cups, 3 Fairs Cups and 3 World Club Cups.

I bet if it was any other club in for Messi, there wouldn't be this much resistance from Barca. La Liga would say his contract is valid and Barca are due a transfer fee, they would want to loose a another star player after Ronaldo left RM. Can see this as City’s payback after the ballon of a president of the league was whinging about the CAS judgement

It doesn't prevent City and Barcelona agreeing a deal but it underlines the hostility La Liga naturally have towards losing one on their jewels.
