No, that isn't the best we can hope for. He could put the papers into FIFA tomorrow, walk out & tell City he'll pay the compensation himself if there is any & sign for the same wages as Gundogan, , for example, which would be closer to the 'best we could hope for'.

And yes, unless Messi is considering changing his mind, Barca are being dicks, it's pathetic.
But do you really think the Messi camp will put the papers into FIFA? It doesn't sound that way in my eyes.
There are reports out that City would not want to go through another court situation. Which suggests to me that the only way of dealing with this is if we sort a fee out.

If Messi continues this stance for another few weeks, I'm sure they will soften their stance.

The transfer of the greatest player of all time doesn’t get completed in the shadows with absolutely nobody knowing about it and no leaks. It’s not already done, no chance. Not with Barca.

You're probably correct. I'm just giving my view.

seems the 2 sides are painting themselves into their own corners.

reading between the vaguest of lines, it appears barca want it all and Messi wants gone. without any middle ground being found this will turn ugly.

without a quick resolution both parties will become entrenched, with a lower chance of a climb down from both sides.

face saving will become the most important thing. pressure being put on both parties (from investors and sponsors) to protect their own brands from unnecessary damage.

personally, i cannot see Messi backing down from his position. unless he is playing barca and City to get a better seal.

it's a fascinating situation and i'm just happy City have got a horse in this race.

And we’re keeping our cards close to our chest

There is no transfer proposal at the moment. Papers will only get submitted to FIFA once a transfer proceeds. At the moment I think Messi has to formally declare that his relationship with Barca is over, and then he can be regarded as a free agent. Then clubs can submit offers to messi and if barca feel they have a claim they can make it.

I reckon this is still 80% on, not because I'm any more ITK than anyone else on here (obviously!), but for one simple reason. It's twenty-five years since the Bosman ruling. It completely rewrote the map of club-player relations.
The days are long gone when footballers were effectively indentured servants.
I can't think of a single major player that a club has been able to hold out against, if that player sincerely and genuinely has wanted to leave, even before their contract's run its term. Sterling wanted to leave Liverpool, they most definitely didn't want to lose him. He left. Sané wanted to leave us, we most definitely didn't want him to. He left. I could go on and on.
Unless Leo has a major change of heart, this will happen. But then, would you really phone up your mentor, now working for another club, and then have a change of heart?? It goes way beyond playing footsie with the media because you're manoeuvring for more money.
Messi will not be a Barcelona player by the end of this window. He may not be with us — but he'll be elsewhere.

It is coming across as desperate, but if you loved a woman and she said she wants to break off the marriage because of the way you've been with her for the last 3 years, you'd fight to keep her to make it right. That's all that Bartameu is doing, and he's well within his right to do so.

not if you had promised to change your ways or you would allow a divorce, only to decide that wasnt the deal agreed, and then be a dick all over again. dicks will be dicks.....

We watch on and will likely make a move when it is prudent to do so. If Messi's agent has had enough with barca and makes some kind of statement announcing an irrevocable split, then we will probably move.

Messi could back down.

barca could also sense the game is up and compromise on a fee.

Or if he says he's going to do that for several weeks, we might say we're out then.

The actual truth is: Messi has said he's going.

People close to it, know what is now being said regarding that & people like yourself are making up stuff in your own mind, to add ultimatums, decisions & time frames to it without knowing any details whatsoever.

IF Messi refuses to change his mind, he will leave Barca. The worst option would be, he stops playing football.

It all comes into play fully if & when he leaves either with Barca's agreement or starts a FIFA/ court procedure.

If El Presidente stops being a dick about it, they may come to an agreement, which may, then involve us.

I'd rather see messi stay at Barcelona than stop playing football. i'm sure many barca fans would rather see him join us than retire to get out of a contract without a public dispute.

Bart, i do not think gives a fuck. he is gambling that messi won't want to ruin a reputation and legacy he has built over ths past two decades, which is easy as he hinself hasn't got one to put on the table. it is a test of messi's love for the club he wants to leave against his willingness to leave it at whatever cost. Can just as easilynl tip him over the edge as it can soften him.
