And we’re keeping our cards close to our chest
we will (again) be painted as the pantomime villain of the piece. whatever happens we will be trashed.

we get him and we have ruined a football love story with our corrupting oil millions.

we dont get him and our corrupting oil millions cant break a football love story.

the club are playing this well so far. we are the admiring suitor, but the player has to push the move. by doing that he proves he wants to go, and proves he wants to come.

seems the 2 sides are painting themselves into their own corners.

reading between the vaguest of lines, it appears barca want it all and Messi wants gone. without any middle ground being found this will turn ugly.

without a quick resolution both parties will become entrenched, with a lower chance of a climb down from both sides.

face saving will become the most important thing. pressure being put on both parties (from investors and sponsors) to protect their own brands from unnecessary damage.

personally, i cannot see Messi backing down from his position. unless he is playing barca and City to get a better seal.

it's a fascinating situation and i'm just happy City have got a horse in this race.

What deal can he get out of Barca? He’s got shit loads of money Barca can’t afford to pay him anymore. They are undergoing a massive rebuild so the sporting side of the why he would want to keep playing for Barca doesn’t exist.

By the way, much as I'm enjoying all this — the sheer bitterness that it's generating amongst rag and dipper fans alone is to be savoured like a fine wine, I'm sipping it down — the Koulibaly transfer or the acquisition of a top level centre half is much the more important business in this window. Just saying.

I'd rather see messi stay at Barcelona than stop playing football. i'm sure many barca fans would rather see him join us than retire to get out of a contract without a public dispute.

Bart, i do not think gives a fuck. he is gambling that messi won't want to ruin a reputation and legacy he has built over ths past two decades, which is easy as he hinself hasn't got one to put on the table. it is a test of messi's love for the club he wants to leave against his willingness to leave it at whatever cost. Can just as easilynl tip him over the edge as it can soften him.

I wouldn't want to see an umotivated Messi playing out a year of his contract, then signing for AC Milan or something, half fit, like happened to Sanchez.

If he somehow found his Mojo for Barca & played as full on Messi, then fair enough.

But I'd rather see him retire than go through a season as a shadow, it would be tragic.

My own opinion is it's almost certainly gone too far for him to continue at Barca, at his true level & that he would be better off retiring if that was his only option.

But in this case we’ve not made an formal offer, it’s all conjecture.

Maybe if no fee can be agreed in the next 10 days say and registration papers are lodged and given provisional green light by FIFA I think we could filibuster any subsequent court case till March when Barça fans will certainly vote to draw a rational line under this sorry affair ( for them at least) and drop any case and move on
