"There had been rumours coming out of the club that everything had been agreed and could all be announced on the 24 June to coincide with the player's 34th birthday.

However, it is not just the signature that is missing but also agreement on all the points of a very complicated contract."
Think the BBC need to Refreshie their stories.
Regurgitated same shite.

That's a very interesting summary of the situation. It's all agreed except every on every aspect of the contract on offer.

He is likely to make money if if signs his new contract from 1st August, unless they are matching or increasing the value which I doubt.

The same thing could be going on with Fernandinho, it is likely to be worth a few hundred grand to take severance pay for July and and new contract from August.
They could both sign contracts that start on the 1st of August right now, I'm not sure severance pay comes into it.

If they have a new contract there is no liability for severance pay even if they are dropping to minimum wage.

The club could do what you say if the player is staying if they are happy to pay more as a gesture of good will, however if a player gets 10 million euros a month and the terms are dropping, it will complicate the negotiation and it will favour the player if they wait.

I’m not sure I’ve understood your post mate, but I don’t think there’s such a thing as severance pay as a contracted footballer. My understanding of it is that There will be a loyalty bonus upon completion of a contract, which will be paid upon completion of said contract regardless of signing a new one now or in 2 weeks. But I know fuck all about fuck all ;)

That's hillarious. What is this, the bloody brexit deal?

So he's agreed to it, apart from signing it and agreeing all the point. Who writes this stuff?

Standard term, at least in the PL, EFL and WSL where all contracts have certain standard PFA terms.

The Retained Lists are part of the process, if you don't get an offer from your current club on at least equal terms in writing, and you haven't signed a new contract with any club, you get one month's severance. All contracts end on 30th June, so in effect you get July's wage as severance. It is more important in lower divisions where you don't tend to get loyalty bonuses and 1 or 2 year contracts are more common.
