it just hit me ?? if messi signs forget it being a marquee signing, it be more like a superdome signing

the whole of the premier league would shit themselves that this little city are now the leading football club in england and there is nothing united or liverpool can do ? for manchester city to be signing messi and paying him £1million pound a week, its not even going to cost us much because of endorsements and sponsorship and shirt sales, only manchester city can do this in a covid-19 hit year and not break the bank

infact messi signing for manchester city would make city even more money and add value to the stock at CFG
so its a win win win

Messi wouldn't make City any money because the ever reliable Kaveh Solhekol said we'd need to sell 10 million shirts to make our money back!

So the timeline -

2017 - Messi and Barcelona sign a contract which lets him leave if he lets the club know within roughly 2 weeks of the end of the season (exact date not known, possibly 10th June).

2019 - Bartomeu publicly acknowledges the clause, but says "It's the same case as with the final contracts that Xavi, (Carles) Puyol and (Andres) Iniesta had. They are players who deserve that liberty, and we shouldn't worry, as they are very committed to Barca."

2020 - March Coronavirus hits and delays the season for the first time since WW2.

2020 - April FIFA issue a directive saying that any clauses applying to the end of the season should be postponed.

It is acknowledged that, as a general rule, employment agreements shall be governed by national law and the contractual autonomy of the parties. Having said this, and consistent with article 18 paragraph 2 of the RSTP, it is proposed that:
(i) Where an agreement is due to expire at the original end date of a season, such expiry be extended until the new end date of the season.
2020 - August Messi says he wants to activate his clause 3 days after the Champions League final ends the season.

2020 - August Barcelona and Bartomeu say they are not honouring the clause, claiming that it ran out during the COVID19 break (when Barcelona had 13 games left to play in their season)
Isn't the "end date of the season" (or alternatively the date when standard contracts expire) typically June 30th? If Messi's contract has a specific date prescribed other than June 30th the argument could be made that the FIFA directive wouldn't apply. I think it's a shit argument that wouldn't stand up in court, but Barca could probably shithouse this out for some time if they wanted.

That's an excellent post mate. If all that stands up, then surely it's cut and dry?

The FIFA thing does say it is a "proposed method" for dealing with things and not necessarily the law that you must follow them, but I think Messi's lawyers could make a decent argument and his PR people could do a pretty savage job of showing the world that Barcelona are basically trying to use the change of dates caused by the pandemic to fuck over Messi.

Just curious lads, I still haven't fully digested this story, but since I have never been to Manchester.
What kind of an area Messi would choose to live , apartment or villa type.
At least, what do you think is best for him.

The definitions section of the RSTP (Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players) defines a “season” as “the period starting with the first official match of the relevant national league championship and ending with the last official match of the relevant national league championship”.

Which would mean the season in Spain ended on 19th July.

Likely somewhere along the canals in New Islington...

There's basically 2 options.

1) Get an expensive apartment in town. Pep, Gundogan, Sané, Stones are in this camp.

2) Get a mansion with loads of space and gardens in the surrounding countryside about 30-60 minutes outside Manchester. Everyone else does this.

You'd think Messi would be in the latter camp.

Miles Platting is quite nice but i think he will opt for Harpurhey

It's interesting and unusual that so many Barcelona fans are sympathetic to the player in this situation.

I guess if we’d had a similar player In the latter Swales era the fans would deffo have sided with the player - in reality it was hard to chose between Comb over andKåre Ingebrigtsen

Top 3 in order.

Moston
Collyhurst
Harpurhey

I think this is the biggest market opportunity our owners will ever have to be honest. The reason we put so much emphasis on the Champions league is to get recognised more globally, Messi would do more than that overnight.

Napoli are still living on the coat tails of Maradonna once playing for them, imagine what Messi would do.

Harpurhey or Monsall is starting to attract classy residents now they’ve done it up a bit - taxi to the stadium is only about 6 quid - but busses can be a bit unreliable
