Local Elections 2023

24.20% of people eligible voted in Salford!!! That is dire. Use it or lose it and with this government I would worry.
We have the right to vote , or not. And i hope that this shows total apathy to politics in this country and the powers that he should take note.

Of course, i know they dont care in the slightest

How are they getting on, I‘m expecting the Tories to do much better than their ‘1000 losses’ claim?

Very disappointed. Been listening to Radio 4 for over an hour and I still haven’t heard a Government flunkey come on and say ‘a lot of good Conservatives have lost their positions through no fault of their own’.
Am I allowed to say I burst out laughing at that. They just don't see what they are doing do they? They live in a little world of their own.

Oh they care, they care because they will be able to say well people are not that bothered about what we do why let them vote anyway.
And the apathetic folk will have won alongside the government.

If people refuse to vote then nothing will change and those in power will assume the people are OK with what they are doing.

Not surprised it was a low turnout. Local elections are only really a chance to stick two fingers up to the govt rather than bring about actual change, and the labour offer being basically akin to Cameron and Osbourne conservatism is hardly inspiring.

I went and voted today at the usual place. No bother with that, but what took me by surprise was having to vote for 3 candidates on the same ballot paper. There must have been at least 20 names on the list. I've never seen that before, so I have no idea how they count the votes. Do they cut the ballot paper up with a pair of scissors and put the marked crosses in tne appopriate pile for counting?

Anyway, when I was asked for my ID, I said 'voter surpression you mean', and the resigned look on the face of the lady handing out the ballot paper was priceless.

The guy sitting next to her was grinning like a Cheshire cat, but she just shook her head and said 'you're not the first to mention it'.
Split the papers into those who've voted across party lines, and count them. Where people haven't voted for all 3 in one party (either for fewer than 3 or across parties) the papers are put on a big sheet where the crosses can be seen and totalled for each candidate. Relatively easy (and easy to check in a recount).

Councils can choose whether to elect all councillors every 4 years (perhaps with different size wards with different numbers of councillors) or by thirds (one each year). If the latter, the electoral commission insists on all wards being roughly the same size each with three councillors (leading to some strange ward boundaries) otherwise the council could change hands with some people not having an election that year.
