I personally embrace them all with open arms. The model was borne many years earlier under the brand of Sir Freddie Alfie Laker in 1966 with two little turboprops. A pathfinder and the father of no frills airline travel that drastically went on to develop the industry into where its at today.
Jet2 Ryan air Easyjet Air Asia and South Western to name but a few. Hampered many times by bureaucracy and competing airlines skullduggery including British airways and eventually brought to his knees by a combination of factors including over ambitious expansion plans.
Laker Airways produced an industry first introducing its daily Sky-train no frills scheduled service between London Gatwick and New York Airport in September 1977 on a dc10 and wait for it charging only £59 one way.Got to be happy days. Unfortunately skytrain went tits up in 5 February 1982. He set it up again and operated from Bahamas as skytrain Bahamas until about 6 year ago He gave pretty good advice to Sir Richard Branson and Sir Stelios of EasyJet to just "sue the bastards", because of the bully boy tactics of British Airways in trying to force budding entrepreneurs out of business.
Today we are stuck for choice with cheap air travel Budget and no frills but in a tight run industry you get what you pay for. They have wings and a tail and get you to your destination safely. Many go on and on about the likes of Ryanair and how they give piss poor service but fact of the matter is they are still increasing passenger numbers and expanding rapidly in today's market.
One example that springs to mind is Mr Mike O'Leary constantly driving down costs for the benefit of its customers and his company. If you comply with his rules then you fly for cheap. If he says print out your boarding pass then print it out or pay a fine instead. Its up to you ! If the weight of cabin baggage is 10kg then don't try to come aboard with 12 kg. Its a business model not a registered charity.
Personally never had any problems with any of the low cost carriers and long may they continue to flourish.
However in the spirit of a good forum let the complaints stream in ;-)
On a much lighter note we traveled to Dublin once for only £1 return , I kid you not !
Have a gander at the video below on the joys of 50p flying !
