My current Mac is getting towards the end of its life. A six-year-old iBook G4, I now have such an old operating system (OS X, version 10.3.9) and so little space that I can't download any upgrades any more. I'd love to splash out on an iMac, but the budget just won't stretch. Would it be possible to buy the much cheaper MacMini and couple it up to my iBook, so I can use the screen and keyboard from there?

I don't know what your budget is, but you could get a new mac from the refurb store online.
Also the matchbook and MacBook pro and I think the iMac are due for an upgrade very soon (as per macrumours buyers guide), so you may get some good deals coming to get rid of the to be older models.

Or you could get a link for the apple education store which gets you a large discount off the website.

That's if you want to stay with mac.
