Main dealer car rip off

I've bought the protocol app for bmw has the proper software built into an easy user face was able to code the injectors and everything, alot of stuff with cars is simple nuts and bolts with the right torque settings.

Will never pay a garage unless it's something I can't do, I've got to replace the o2 sensor next!

Pro tool not protocol haha

Fair enough mate and if its working for you 100% then great.

I used to sell software and a multi manufacturer unit will set you back a good £1500 and even then its not always 100% and you will rely on updates to the software to cover new releases by the maker etc.

They are pretty good though and its what your RAC/AA man will carry and use to diagnose and reset fault codes.

Yeah plenty of chancers out there, did loads of research before I bought it, could have just installed inpa but it's old and clunky as fuck the app just uses all that but in a more user friendly way.

My cars 11 years old so I bet they are even more complicated now but it still amazes me how much tech went into a 3 litre 3 series all them years ago it's a dream to drive.

Be interesting what happens to mechanics when electric becomes the norm, will have to do specialist courses for each brand I bet.

Seen a few Mitsubishi electrics stripped down and yes, its specialist tech work and its something else. Best of luck getting that serviced out of main dealer though as it isn't happening any time soon if its a battery issue.

Be a good idea for young men and women to train in that sort of field will have plenty of work coming up.

My mate is a mechanic and he’s said that mechanics are some of the biggest rip off merchants in the country.

They'll do jobs that don’t need doing on cars every week, and we have no way of knowing.

It should be in the National Curriculum at schools GCSE Mechanics so that people can look after their own vehicles and only use mechanics if we can’t fix a job ourselves.

Used tohave a Suburu Impreza which I took to the dealer for servicing every year. Then one year, they told me that the brake discs need replacing. What they hadn't realised was that they'd (apparently) done them in between services 4 months previously. Never went back.

Now I'm older and driving a Kia, it's under 7 years warranty and I always take it there. One time they told me it needed 2 new tyres and gave me a quote. Given my experience at Suburu I thought I'd get a second opinion so took it to Kwikfit. They confirmed they should be replaced but quoted me £60 more so I paid the £25 fee and took it back to the dealer. Still saved money.

People should also be aware.

You can take your car to be serviced anywhere you like. Main dealer only is no longer and as long as its serviced with OEM parts and as per schedule and the book is stamped your warranty is covered. Anyone saying differently is lying. A £500 service at BMW is the same service at your local garage for £120 and the parts are the same. main dealers will tell you their oil filter is a special part and BMW only....bullshit it is. They ordered it in for £8.

This is true Blue but I am led to believe the garage must be VAT registered and as you mentioned it must use all original equipment parts with ref numbers and follow the maker’s service schedule in full. One interesting thing I was told when I bought the daughter a Kia was that the additional warranty that takes it up to a superlative 7 years is only valid if we use their Kia franchised network whilst on the other hand their base warranty is maintainable at any VAT registered garage. It's such a shame certain garages miss advise and openly deceive consumers into getting unnecessary work carried out as it gives a bad rep to all the hard working lads out there. If you find a good mechanic then loyalty becomes a two way street and stick to them like glue.

Genuine manufacturer parts dont need to be used for service mate, third part OEM parts are perfectly fine as they are made to manufacture spec.

An £8 oil filter made by Mann auto for a ford focus is the same and as good as a ford one that they want to charge you say £40 for.

All filters and oil as long as it is OEM is allowed within the law and keeps you in warranty.

The garage I used made a serious point of listing serial parts numbers and even going as far as to itemize the oil as he said if there was an issue down the line with regard to warranty repair is is far more difficult for them to refute a claim if the recommended parts which are not overtly more expensive have been used .He said detailed records if you were to service your car outside of the network will prove that I have looked after the vehicle to dealer specification. Might have put around another 10-15% on my already reasonable non franchise bill.

Have a quick gander at this ..
