Does anyone know anyone that lived on Maine road? I'm sure there was a lad /lass that used to go to our school(Wilbraham)that lived in one of the houses facing the ground. Plus who lived in the sky blue house?

Eric Wirral. Used to play for City and became Jimmy Grimble's PE teacher

Haha, give it to Gordon

I remember speaking to some scousers in a pub once and one was bragging to me about how he survived Maine road. I'm too young to remember the real violent days.

The game against them in 81 league cup semi final was mayhem outside.

A couple of years ago I had an article that was from a Villa site about a game at Maine Road circa around 1977. It was dark once the game had finished and the Villa lads were attacked on the Kippax car park and ended up missing the coach back to Birmingham. The tale then continued with them getting chased all the way to a local park (I assumed Platt Fields but the Villa lads claimed it was Alexandra Park) where they were attacked by black youths armed with knifes who chased them around until it was getting light again.

That's the general gist of it anyway but it was quite an intense read and obviously a harrowing experience for those involved. Almost understandably they didn't shed any tears when our old ground met the wrecking ball. But to put it in perspective I think a lot of the 'Maine Road Experience' was psychological as well, as the words Moss Side sent fear through most people.

Always thought it funny that a pub could be named "The Welcome" on Moss Side

Man City 's Maine Road ground was no picnic and there was often running battles.
I once put a bet on at Man City on the score of a game against us only for it to be robbed while i was in there by bloke with a sawn off shotgun.

dead true that story, was out and about that night on Claremont rd hours after the game, the Fair was on at Platt Fields , running battles till gone midnight with the locals & a gang of black guys returning from the park. Villa were handy lads as well though.

Nice to have that verified by someone who can obviously recall it. Not quite sure why the Villa fan thought they were chased onto Alexandra Park? but it makes no difference really. You mention a fair? and now thinking back I'm sure this get's mentioned. If I can find the post/article again I'll post it on this thread.

Stories of violence and general 'aggro' from the 70s and 80s are usually exaggerated.

I was there, and walked through a lot of it.

In the main it was just immature posturing by rival groups of a few young men who fancied a fight.

I can remember loads of matches where fans from both sides walked peacefully past silly fights by this idiotic minority.

Did you ever go to Anfield, Chelsea, West Ham, Everton, Utd, Leeds etc etc etc etc (70's/80's)

Easy places like Leicester away, Derby away or Coventry maybe but none of the others

Yes I did.

In my opinion and experience it was very easy to avoid any trouble in those days.

As a City fan since 1963 I can honestly say the worst thing I've personally experienced is a Newcastle fan trying, unsuccessfully, to grab my dad's scarf after the 5-0 defeat at St James Park in 1983.

Thuggery and violence at football has never affected the majority of fans. It's always been confined to a few mindless idiots.

I really wish you'd been there when I was getting bricked by Leeds, nearly stabbed by scousers and kicked to fuck by Spurs lol

You could have told them right off....little scallywags.

(The Leeds FA Cup one we were locked in and all of us were dodging bricks and bottles in the lowfield Rd Paddock which were being launched over the massive gates and then mayhem on the road outside . No avoiding that mate.)
