Mancini Coaching Article by Peter North

Really interesting stuff. I'm so glad we've got Mancini - I have always rated him as a manager and the return to Sven's approach in his first 4 games is great to see.

Have to hold my hands up on Hughes and admit I got it totally wrong, and now I'm enormously glad he's gone - and not a moment too soon (ditto on Thaksin, by the way). Interesting, too, how even the pro-Hughes players such as Shay are now pro-Mancini (in Shay's case, probably, because he doesn't have to make 20 hero-saves every match!).

Would've been really interesting to see what Sven would have made of ADUG's resources. I'd love to see him back at the club at some point - not as manager, I love Mancio, but in some technical capacity.

I would also add that it's interesting how similar we look to Fulham when out of possession - Fulham are the best-coached PL side IMO, and the similarity of thinking of Hodgson and Sven (and thus Mancini) has already been touched on, so it's no coincidence.

I find it amazing that Hodgson has not been offered a role at a 'bigger' English club. Perhaps he needs to make more friends in the media.

Was talking over a couple of beers with a fellow Blue who visited Russia recently. We both speculated that, assuming Mancini stays beyond the summer, it doesn't seem impossible that there might be a role for Sven somewhere (somehow don't see him staying at Notts County). Personally would be quite happy to see him back.

If Sven was such a tactical genius he would never have had to admit we'd been 'found out' and had no plan B.

Cant fault you mate. The test for Mancini will be when other premiership managers find an effective way of playing against the system-i.e quick switches of play from flank to flank and making use of the players that drift between the defensive lines.

I'd be willing to bet that if Sven hadn't been sacked half way through a season and had been handed 200 million to buy whoever he wanted, he'd have come up with a Plan B quite easily.... something that was totally beyond his clueless replacement.

Read what I said, I actually said that:

This defensive set up provides the foundation for the attack; it employs the same concept of Catenaccio in an updated form. The aims is draw teams down the defensive areas of the pitch and regain the ball in order to counter attack

This is different from saying the system IS Catenaccio. If you going to say I have done something say what I said don’t make it up. Also in Italy Catenaccio has TWO meanings, the tactical system and the mentality of play.

As for the criticism that the article is very basic, that was my aim. I wanted to provide a basic overview of the system for those who wanted an insight. I am aware of what is and is not basic as I have compiled material for UEFA B, UEFA A and PRO LICENCE. Much of what I have is bound by contract.

Having said all of that I enjoyed your post nick it was a good read, since I had the chance to observe and meet some of the managers you talk about I found it interesting, I have talked about the systems they use and how they train it with a few of them. I would be interested in reading your posts regarding Sven and his system.

I will also be taking Italian and Spanish coaching certificates in the near future. I have travelled through many countries in Europe including Italy visiting many big clubs. I am fully aware of the workings of how managers are viewed there as opposed to here.

If any poster has questions or would like to make further criticism then email me on ironman268@googlemail.com.

No offence intended mate. The article was great and I think I may have published one of your (?) pieces on Mourinhos style on the board (published sometime last year on a coaching forum)..?

My shattered, difficult to comprehend post on Sven is gone with the wind I'm afraid. At no greater loss I may add.

Sven plus 200 million would have won atleast some domestic trophies by now and be challenging for top spot. Sven spent big money at upstarts Lazio in the late 90s, the director there picked the players and but he delievered the 7 trophies.
