Roberto Mancini is set to have an important end-of-season heart-to-heart ... with young City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The Blues manager, who hopes to lead the club's first Champions League campaign, faces a tough decision in the summer over whether to agree a repeat of Hart's loan season at Birmingham.

The England squad goalkeeper, who is not allowed to play in Sunday's Premier League game against his parent club, has flourished at St Andrews as Alex McLeish's first choice.

But Mancini knows that a duel for City's No.1 spot between two of the best keepers in the League could only benefit the Blues' season as well as offering rotation options.

Brum chief McLeish fears he will have to wave goodbye to his brave Hart, though Mancini would then have to keep both the youngster and Republic of Ireland legend Shay Given happy.

City's boss said: "We have a very good goalkeeper at the club in Shay Given. Shay and Joe Hart are two of the best in the Premier League, and it is important to have two good goalkeepers.

"The Premier League season is long, and if you are playing in the Champions League, as well as the FA Cup and the League Cup, then you need the players - you need two top goalkeepers.

Mancini might have to squeeze their conversation in rather quickly if, as many observers are urging, 22-year-old Hart is included in the England party for the World Cup in June.

He added: "Joe could be at the World Cup - he is a good, young, strong goalkeeper. Capello knows him very well now, and if he decides on Joe, then that is a good choice.

"I'm happy for Joe that he's doing so well .... but I'm also pleased that he cannot play against us on Sunday!"

Sounds like he's gonna talk him in to coming back. Hart seems a bit pissed off and bitter about being moved on in the way he did from us. I think Mancini has got a bit of sweetening to do to convince him to come back

I think Mancini'll do fine. He kept Balotelli under wraps at Inter and we've all seen how "The Special One" is dealing with him. In comparison Hart's a puppy.

Would rotating the keepers be beneficial to the squad? I mean Joe and Shay both have different traits and react to different situations in different ways. For example corners, so would this cause problems for the defence?

May well be too little too late as far as Hart's concerned. He's made it plain he'd rather stay at Brum, and they've made it clear they want to keep him as their number 1...

I think he would jump at the opportunity for a number 1 jersey and champions league football.

but mancini IS quite the charming bastard. and he has several cards he can play. revised deal? potentially he could make promises of champions league appearances. and let's not forget we hold his contract. if we said you're staying and that's that (not that we will), joe seems like the level headed type who would knuckle down and get on with it, at least until january.

and city should make it clear that he is still under contract for 3 more years so in relaity it makes not a jot of difference what joe or brum want!

Maybe the club and Mancini shouldn't be waiting until the summer to start their charm offensive...

To be quite honest, I can see it from Hart's point of view. He believes in himself, and believes he's good enough to play week in and week out. McCleish seems to have that belief in him too. I find it hard, if not impossible, to imagine him being happy coming back and being Shay's understudy...

It would be absolutely fantastic to have Given and Hart in the same squad, rotating in and out.

I agree wholeheartedly, and much like the scenario with Nedum possibly wanting to play for Nigeria and turn his back on England, I think there's an element of youthful naivety about it. Hart has said repeatedly that he wants to stay in Birmingham, even though he knows where City are going...

In the club's shoes, I would make a choice...if he's not going to be first choice next season, and he wants to go back to Brum either on loan or permanently, we should let him go...

I think it wont be long until hart will be a better goalkeeper than Given, so we should definately offer Hart a new and improved contract, and if we get chumps next season we are gonna need Hart at City, as we will be playing an awfull lot of important games.

Really do feel that he can be No 1 in 2 years time. Next year he'd get a fair crack of the whip, play a fair few games and maybe even turn Mancini's head towards him in the race for the GK jersey by the end of the season.

Brum will have a fight on their hands next season I feel, and mid table would be decent for them. I do hope that Joe comes back and gives it a good go here. He has the serious possibility of CL football and ousting Shay to look forward to, and if he does oust Shay then he'll know he must be a damn good keeper and is highly valued by City.

Well they're not, its April 8th and Mancini is discussing it now.

If Joe Hart is as good as everyone says (and he thinks he is), then there is no reason why he should fear coming back and competing with Shay Given.

If he outperforms Given he'll play, earn more money and play in and against better teams than he will at Birmingham.

If he's ambitious he should return and make himself number 1 here, if he fears doing so then maybe he's not confident in his own ability ?

He should be very grateful that City allowed him out on loan to further his career, and not "bitter" about it.

Mancini is paying lip service to Joe Hart the week before we play Brum because he's been asked about it. Nothing more and nothing less. I will be impressed if he's actually spoken to Joe more than once since he took over as manager...

well, perhaps you could see this as the first move in the charm offensive. mcleish has had joe's ear day in, day out for 6 months now. if I was in the same situation I would do what Mcleish has, playing on his hurt feelings, and I wouldn't want him to consider that maybe he should feel hurt by the manager who let him go, as opposed to the club as a whole. certainly the fans adored joe. he recieved less criticism than almost any other player I can think of.

Perhaps you've accepted McLiesh's version of reality just a little to readily. I certainly would not expect Mancini to offer Joe a role as an understudy. He should be told that he would come back as an equal. There really hasn't much to choose between the two this year. Mancini will tell Joe that he believes in him. If Joe believes in himself, why would he not relish the challenge of fighting for the jersey at a top club? The competition will be fair and open, and the prize on offer is much greater.

if, and i mean if, we get to the champions league, we have often spoken about having two quality players in every position
without being overly critical of taylor he is not a high quality back up
next season we could be playing upwards of 60/70 games, i'm sure there will be space for Joe somewhere in all of those fixtures
furthermore if Shay were to get injured, do we really want to rely on a poor second choice like scum, the arse and chelsea have had to this season

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini admits he faces a dilemma regarding Joe Hart.
The Italian boss plans to hold talks with the 22-year-old goalkeeper at the end of the season once his successful loan spell with Birmingham ends.
Hart, who has been ruled out of the match at Eastlands on Sunday as it is against his parent club, is enjoying an impressive campaign.
However, keeping both number one Shay Given and Hart happy at City is another matter.
Mancini told City's website: 'We have a very good goalkeeper at the club in Shay Given. Shay and Joe Hart are two of the best in the Premier League, and it is important to have two good goalkeepers.
'The Premier League season is long, and if you are playing in the Champions League, as well as the FA Cup and the League Cup, then you need the players - you need two top goalkeepers.
'It is important that I speak with Joe in the weeks after the Premier League finishes, then we will see about next season. He has worked very well at Birmingham and he has developed.'
Such has been Hart's good form at Birmingham he has been tipped to win a place in England's World Cup squad.
England manager Fabio Capello has been monitoring his progress with both David
James and Robert Green in sides at the wrong end of the table.

Mancini added: 'Joe could be at the World Cup - he is a good, young, strong goalkeeper. Capello knows him very well now, and if he decides on Joe, then that is a good choice.
'I'm happy for Joe that he's doing so well but I'm also pleased that he cannot play against us on Sunday!'

If it were a straight choice between

a) another season or two of Given and losing Hart

or

b) keeping Hart for the next ten years of his career and losing Given

I'd take b) every single time.

Hopefully that isn't the choice but neither would be happy with playing second fiddle to the other next year, and rightly so.

All this, "he should come back and compete" stuff is nonsense. It doesn't work like that for keepers and anyone thinking that a keeper as good as Hart should be happy to play a few cup games and then take a 50/50 chance of maybe becoming first choice, is expecting him to do something that no other top keeper would do.

Personally, I rate him as at least as good as Given.

Mind you, I thought that before Given was signed, after he was signed and ever since.

If it has to come down to making a choice between the two and the club choose Given, dumping Hart, I will be devastated.

Hopefully, Mancini would make the correct decision. Under the Welsh numpty Hart would have been shipped out without second thought, in that scenario, purely because he wasn't a 'Hughes man'.

Another season on loan for Hart might solve the problem but you have to guard against giving him the impression that he is going on loan because he isn't yet good enough to replace Given. And given the way Hart and Given have performed over the last two years (or over their whole careers imo), that just isn't the case (and that isn't disrespect to Given, Hart just has so much more to his game)
