Manctopia on BBC2

Didsbury has always been expensive and a desirable place to live. Amazed how it has extended it's borders recently in to Withington and Fallowfield. I didn't know Princess Parkway was now Didsbury lol.

Even Burnage is seeing ridiculous inflation. Fair play to those who live there and are selling but it doesn't exactly warrant the inflation, I lived there for 2 year stint not too long a go and it's not exactly a desirable area. I suppose a USP is that it's next door and is in walking distance from Didsbury.
The east side of Princess Parkway between Withington met stop and the river has always been in West Didsbury. It's nothing new.
The bit that estate agents now call Didsbury but is really Withington is Burton Road north of the Met stop and the roads off it.

In my experience, many of those who live in Winton claim they are from Worsley. :)

For a while, I used to live nearby in Monton.
Nahhh, Worsley's too posh for me!! I was born in Patricroft, lived in Winton, moved to Chorlton then married and lived in Burnage for 22 yrs and came home to Winton after my divorce!! Winton is ace. Monton is ok but it is getting too upmarket now. :-)

I don't think she would be getting any commission from that 'fashion' advisor. Seemed like a tyre-kicker to me

Yes, I got that impression. 20 yrs in the countryside with 130 acres, don't you know. Fuck off back there then, the city doesn't need you or your shoes. I'm guessing her former husband traded her in for a younger model.

Just watched the Mantopia programme on BBC2. At one point they had a Uni researcher giving a guided tour of the city centre and complaining how it is being spoilt by investors building flats. Got to Ancoats and mentioned how the Abu Dhabi United Group were redeveloping the area for profit. Well the words had only just left his mouth when he was brought right down from his anti Abu Dhabi diatribe by a woman from Collyhurst who told him in no uncertain terms what a jerk he was and added I am a City supporter. Well done girl. How it got past the BBC editors I do not know.

I saw it. I am glad it was shown as he was clearly a jumped up FC rag type wearing his giggsy nappy. His point was completely irrelevant to that area. The good lady lived there. He didn't.

Sadly there’s lots like him from Ancoats who object to investment and new development. They want it like it was back in the day when you could not go out after dark! He was a proper tool though.

I know what you mean. I grew up around Collyhurst, Ancoats then Newton Heath. The area is being gradually transformed as the city centre pushes out.
Most of the housing stock back in the day was council. Hardly recognise the place when I’ve driven through.
It blows my mind when you see some of the prices quoted for New Islington flats/houses.

That nob was nowhere near from Ancoats. He was a second rate polytechnic lecturer who grew up in the leafy suburbs

Last week a large part was about the homeless. No mention of Vinnie's efforts.

They had it on this week, it’s been a good series so far, mad they are forcing people out of their homes in Collyhurst so they can build £350 grand homes on the location. Closing down a centre that gives the homeless breakfast in the morning in the city centre and moving the location into Old Trafford so they could throw more flats up.

Last night's episode had a charity fundraiser organised by Vinnie and Andy Burnham but seemed to imply it was a bit of window dressing rather than tackling real problems. The lady defending the ADUG investment was brilliant, especially as she was actually being threatened with her own house being demolished as part of a different development. She was pointing out that ADUG had been building on waste ground and car parks to improve the area, she had no illusions about it also being money making, but nobody else was prepared to put the money in and she'd take it. The little researcher guy was dumbstruck. She also had a garden gnome with a City shirt, got to love her.

Great to read that, cheers. I missed it last night but will certainly give the iplayer a go today.

I had to laugh when one of the guys in the office said “Trafford is not in Manchester”

Can't make sense of what they're trying to achieve in Collyhurst. I worked there for 35 years, saw the houses replaced by flats, the flats replaced by houses and the occupants relocated around Manchester, then the houses that replaced the flats demolished and huge areas of wasteland. Makes no sense to me to knock down any more houses if they're in good order just to replace them with new ones. A mix of private and social housing might be the best way forward.

I don’t think affordable housing is on their agenda, I couldn’t believe it when they were doing the tour of a show home and being quoted £350k to live in Collyhurst. The locals are slowly being pushed out of the city.
