Gary "Mani" Mounfield RIP

As someone who absolutely idolises the Roses, I’m fucking heartbroken.

This man has given me music that has, and continues to, to this day, genuinely move me. It makes me buzz, makes me nostalgic, makes me wistful, makes me introspective and makes me yearn for memories I don’t even have, places I’ve never even been and people I’ve never even met. Like one of our greatest BM members @manimanc I still listen to their music every single day, in some form.

In recent times and joyously for me, my daughter has gotten massively into the Roses. Adores their music, has all their posters and dresses like them. Watching her discover new material by them for the first time and being blown away is beyond special to me. She gets it, just as I did and still do.

Mani’s work is sensational. The bass line introduction to I Wanna be Adored is the greatest, most spine tingling call to arms ever written. His bass line on Fools Gold is so godlike it was 100 years ahead of the rest of music back in 1989. His work on every track on that first album is absolutely sublime and always pulls at my heart strings.

A very sad day. What an absolute geez. RIP Mani.
You're right about his bass lines, especially on Fools Gold which (the track) had a refreshingly unique sound back then getting them lots of air play.

Only other band i can think of who sounded diversely unique was another Manchester band who were relatively unknown and stayed under the radar.

Watching New Fast Automatic Daffodils headline Piece Hall, Halifax in 92 i never thought they'd become mainstream, neither did i think support band Pulp would either, but they did, and deserved to.

Its made me laugh reading about how your daughter dresses like them. I always though the Roses looked like a bunch of tramps.
I have just been discussing this very thing with my mate. We went to see Mani and Hooky do an in-convo with at Salford Lads Club a few years ago. They were talking about how well dressed they were. I pretty much told him they looked like tramps and he got upset, and started asking me to stand up up so he could see what I had on (For the record I looked smart as fuck).
It was a fun night
I remember asking Hooky whether he thought the Hacienda would have been built if Ian Curtis had not died. He seemed a bit taken aback by it, as if it was a question that had never been put to him before.
They could both tell a story, that's for certain. I was only looking at the dates Mani had announced, the other day.
Its such a shame. Just a normal Manc lad who done good and kept his feet firmly on the ground.

I recall going to see Primal Scream at the Apollo.
We were in the Aspley Cottage (or whatever it is called) having a pint and someone said the band had turned up on the tour bus.
We pile outside and see Bobby Gillespie's stick insect legs carrying him off the bus and inside. Mani steps off and gets a decent applause as you'd expect. Two blaggers start up "Hey Mani, sneak us in. Mani.... MANI..... COME ON MANI...... get us in......
Mani turns as he's walking through and says "What do you think my fuckin' name is? Gary Oxfam Mounfield?"

Blackpool remains my 2nd favourite all time gig, Spike Island..... well..... at least I can say I was there and have the ticket still.
A sad day, RIP

I’ll tell her you said that. I suggest you sleep with one eye open mate :)

New FADS were class mate. Big, Fishes Eyes and Partial were blasted out at mine only yesterday.

87-90 was absolutely sans pareil for us gig-going folk. Watching Inspirals in back articulated truck Albert Sq, Mondays doing 2 nights Hillsboro benefit gigs Hacienda supported by Dub Sex
Roses on the rise playing the International
New Fads
King of the Slums
Indie clubs left right centre : playing pool against Ian Brown in the Venue
Bez getting me and mates into after show party at Zap Club Brighton
The Roses handing out T shirts in DeVilles
New Order waltzing around Temperance Club with Anthony Wilson
Loads of great stuff in TV. Granada Reports, grace à Wilson showing loads of local stuff.
Mani was a fucking great bass player - he eschewed the celebrity bollocks and he lived life at 5 times your average speed.
Great great times and a reminder to hurtle into the coffin, leaving nothing behind but love and respect.
