Marks & Spencer Christmas advert taken down

Wait, THAT is the ad being referred to here? The one with Sophie Ellis-Bextor?
I didn't even notice the hats!

The hats are not in the video.

They are in the still image that was put up on social media, with the same caption accompanying the video ad.

That's what the reactions are to.

It seems there are people now being offended by people who are offended by people being offended about everything, and that offends me.

Call me cynical. But I wouldn't be surprised if M&S knew exactly what they were doing here.

Not when they first shot it, obviously.

But when they decided to cut it out of the video, then post it in isolation as a still online, then quickly aplologise and remove it, while making national headlines.

There are focus groups that go through every angle of every bit of PR, no way everyone misses the incidental chances of that image before it goes out online. While conveniently not being in the video which everyone now wants to see, and share and talk about.

Opportunist PR.

M+S has decided to withdraw an ad which might be interpreted as offensive, in the context of a current geopolitical and humanitarian crisis.
Why would some people get so enraged at this decision, given the context?
Drinking too much of the Culture Wars Kool-Aid?

Could paper hats in traditional Christmas colours really be interpreted as a country’s flag?

Nonsense.

Opportunist PR.

Just enough 'controversy' to generate headlines and discussion. But without really offending anyone, or it blowing back on them in any meaningful capacity.

They don't even say they recieved complaints, they say they pulled it due to 'your feedback'.

Just enough for the media and social media to run away with, while they get to look both sensitive and like an innocent traditional big outfit at the end of some misplaced ott wokeism typical of today.

In many ways, well fucking played guys.

The ad also had men and women in it, fire and Christmas presents, totally inappropriate for the woke, and as an advert it was also a capitalist attempt to draw people in to do some shopping. Surprised Just Stop Oil haven’t sprayed orange paint over every M&S shop
