Matija Nastasic

Manchester City fans have recognised the talent of Nastasic who, with only a season in Italy’s Serie A under his belt, has settled into the English game as if, in Keegan’s words, “he has been here all his life”.

Few had heard of the Serbian international before Mancini signed him from Fiorentina in a £12million cash-plus-player deal – as Montenegrin Stefan Savic went the other way.

But he steps out at Wembley against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final tomorrow having ousted England international Joleon Lescott as Vincent Kompany’s defensive partner and with Keegan joining a list of admirers.

He said: “I really like him. He would be my idea of a centre half – one who can come out with the ball and play.

“He’s more of a Bobby Moore and Franz Beckenbauer style of defender, although perhaps it’s crazy to compare him to those sort of players now.

“I’m not saying Nastasic is as good as Moore or Beckenbauer because we have to see a lot more of him yet, but he has really impressed me from the first time I saw him play for City against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

“If Roberto Mancini puts a player in for his debut in the Bernabeu that tells you everything you need to know about him. He has come into the English game and played as if he has been there for ever.

“In five or six years’ time, you could see him developing into a Nemanja Vidic, even though he is different sort of player. He could become even bigger than Vidic, who has probably been the best centre-half in this country for five or six years.”

Nastasic and Kompany kept Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney quiet in the Manchester derby on Monday and face another test against Chelsea’s fleet-footed attacking midfield trio of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Juan Mata, and Demba Ba.

Keegan added: “The big test will come next season when people have had a good look at him. They will try to find out what he is not good at and where his weaknesses are. I haven’t seen too many at the moment. But if you have people watching him every week then they might say, ‘well, he goes to sleep every now and again’ or point to a lack of experience which is normal with a player so young coming from overseas.

“The only way you get experience is by playing. But of all the defenders who have come into the Premier League over the last 10 years, he has got to be in the top five already.”

Nastasic is the one positive from Mancini’s five signings last summer with Javi Garcia, Jack Rodwell, Maicon and Scott Sinclair all failing to shine.

But Keegan added: “Roberto bought five players and they are not going to win the title so it looks like they’ve taken a step backwards. If you stand still in the Premier League, you go backwards.

“Why give him a five-year contract if you don’t want to build something? On his school report, he has done a great job.” The same could be said of Nastasic

Could be with his talent, but we're no Arsenal. Since the takeover don't think there's been one important player we've let go when not on our own terms. I mean just look at Tevez, even under intense pressure to sell we refused to do so unless we got value. Think this is a great approach to win trophies.

Best centre half on the pitch last night

Deluded. Jones was. I'd take the kid over him usually but credit where credit is due.
Jones made some important interceptions when City only had one striker on the pitch. He was taken on and beaten quite easily for Sergio's goal. United played most of the game with the 3 best strikers in the prem ever and had a couple of half chances.

maldini, baresi, beckenbaur and moore wouldn't have stopped Sergio scoring :)

Agreed Tevez made Stan Laurel look good, he was just diving in stopping things with his legs. Nastasic was more in control never looked in trouble.

When do you ever see Nasty go to ground? Very rare, sign of a very good defender. His reading of the game is 1st class, reminds me very much of Bobby M.

What a truly good player we have on our hands, if him and Vinny are still stopping shots on Joe's goal in 6 years time we could have won the lot.
Same here mate. I can't believe this is only his first season. I hope he continues this great form.

Always been told centre halfs get better with age learning positioning, reading of the game and being composed on the ball. The lad at 20 has all three now.

Apart from the fact that Bobby M constantly made killer interceptions & won crucial 1v1 challenges & difficult headers etc, which Nastasic hardly ever does.

His performance v the rags was one of the most overhyped in City history. I can see why people think he may become a quality player, but at the moment, if you had two Nastasics at the heart of our defence rather than having Vinny, Lescott or Kolo next to him, we would get mullered beyond belief in just about every game.

In the Derby we had Vinny winning 90% of everything, with Nastasic stood about making the occasional interception or giving away free kicks, & rags had Phil Jones winning 90% of everything with Camelgob stood around watching him.

The performances of Wio & Nasti were very similar, in the fact that they both did pretty much nothing of note.

Nasti got 8/10 for it.

Download the game & just watch him, alone, & try to justify the 8/10.

Anyone who gives him an 8 has to give Phil Jones 11.

Nastasic is a promising young player & that's it. The rest of the hype is ridiculous.

He must be doing something right to have ousted an English international from his role in the best defence in the PL?

^^

what aload of shit.

Nasty is fantastic and the reason you dont notice him is because he makes it look so simple. Hes alot better than Kolo, lescott and phil fucking jones. He is not over hyped, infact he doesnt get enough praise.

hes a footballing centre half instead of the usual panic and hoof type atheletes who are so bad at reading the game they get away with it because of there pace (Richards for exaple). Nasty isnt the fastest but doesnt need to be as he reads the game so well.

That's probably because he's 20 years-old and still learning. Add to this the fact that he's not a very combative centre-half, and more of a ball playing one. The great centre-half partnerships in recent years have always had that mix of a ball playing centre-half and a combative centre-half (Kompany & Lescott, Ferdinand & Vidic, Carvalho & Terry) so having two Nastasic-style players in defence wouldn't be the best idea.

In the Derby we had Vinny winning 90% of everything, with Nastasic stood about making the occasional interception or giving away free kicks, & rags had Phil Jones winning 90% of everything with Camelgob stood around watching him.

Again, the combative and ball-playing centre-half partnerships. The Dzeko - Aguero partnership that worked so well at the start of the last season was so effective for a similar reason: Dzeko lead the line while Aguero played off him in the way that Kompany leads the defence and Nastasic plays a helping hand.

Yeah, I mean, god forbid that people would get excited about (and support) a young player that seems composed and very much at home at the highest level of English football.

(quote)

If he was English the media wouldn't stop wanking over him, but because he ain't and he plays for us then he will get little praise.

Great player with lots of potential, really hard to believe he's only 20.

The only knock I would have is he often suffers from a case of "50p head".
