Roberto Mancini has earmarked Borussia Dortmund central defender Mats Hummels as the man to bolster his Manchester City defence as they go in search of their first Premier League title, according to Footybunker.com.
Although the Citizens find themselves sitting at the top of the Premiership table, boss, Mancini has yet to find a regular central defensive partner for captain Vincent Kompany . Kolo Toure , Joleon Lescott and Stefan Savic have shared the responsibility between them this season but none have managed to take the role as their own.
Cracks have begun to appear in Mancini’s side after an outstanding first-half to the season so the City boss has turned his attention to the Bundesliga in a bid to boost his defensive options. Mats Hummels has been an impressive rock of consistency for Dortmund over recent seasons and is regarded as one of the German League’s best defenders.
The 23 year-old initially joined Dortmund on-loan from Bayern Munich in 2008 and made an instant impact establishing himself as a first-team regular. In 2009 Hummels signed for The Borussians on a permanent deal and has since formed a formidable centre-back partnership with Neven Subotic . The pair were instrumental in Dortmund’s 2010/2011 Championship winning side which saw Hummels receive wide acclaim for his performances from pundits and coaches within the game.
The former-Bayern man is a composed centre-half who is technically gifted, great in the tackle and strong in the air – attributes which have seen him become a regular in Germany’s national team. Hummels has also shown he has a versatility to his game by filling in as a defensive midfielder for the Bundesliga Champions on several occasions.
Hummels would certainly bolster City’s defensive options and could provide Mancini with the ideal partner for Vincent Kompany. The highly-regarded German is contracted at the Westfalenstadion until 2014 and won’t be prised away cheaply. Dortmund will undoubtedly want to keep hold of their man who has been a key figure in the clubs recent success but a big offer from City could change their minds. The Black Yellows can expect to acquire upwards of £16m for Hummels which shouldn’t be a problem for Roberto Mancini who has a bottomless pit of money at his disposal.
