Knew this would end in this way because despite the attacks on UAE, some of the states are v sophisticated & know how to react. Just because we treat every Tom Dick & Harry terrorist with kid gloves doesn’t mean we are in a position to advise other countries!!

I’m still waiting for the complimentary links to our club but guess it’s “old news “ now they can’t use it to beat us up!! Back to DS claims....

If advocating, and actually doing, torture is treating terrorists and, come to think of it, innocent people 'with kid gloves' then yes that's what UK govt does.

I comment on the Guardian's Football comment, or did.

Made my last comment on their this morning explaining my reasons. There are a lot of other City fans on there too.

The 'Guardian community' is extremely hostile to City at the moment and I quite enjoy fighting our corner but at the same time when the host is anti-City, how can I be a part of it?

Yeah, I just saw that. I understand your reasons but it would be a shame to let them win. Perhaps we should just stick to the football and refuse to respond to any of the human rights comments which do nothing but belittle an important issue.

Up to you.

It's frustrating, I've seen the comments sections deteriorate rapidly this season. I'm not one to post many words but if it is a football match report and the comments are about human rights they should be rightfully reported and deleted, that's what I try to do.

If stanloy victor collyflower is reading this forum, is it ok for me to buy a Manchester City lamp shade and duvet cover now?

Great he’s been released.

People need to understand that if you go to any Middle East country you are going to be subject to a capricious Justice system that runs on the whims of those who really rule the place.

And then not go. And especially don’t go and ask dangerous questions.

I’ve a lot of sympathy for the UAE rulers. They are trying to modernise a country where half the population subscribe to primitive and extreme versions of Islam. They walk a fine line. Like the rest of the region the choice is modernising or fundamentalist Islamic dictatorship. There’s no unicorns abd rainbows option. Just look at Pakistan or Turkey’s ongoing slide into Islamic dictatorship.

I don’t look on the City Project as Sportswashing. Of course image building is a huge part of it but it also means they have something to lose big on. They want the project to succeed so cannot be casual with their rep.

Besides, while it is true our owners are part of the ruling elite, their family is not tbr one controlling the security services and what passes for a justice system. I’m certain that behind the scenes our owners have been going,

‘WTF are you assholes playing at?”

Bottom line - if you travel, work or live in The Middle East then understand the risks and behave accordingly.

The readers comments weren't enabled for the West Ham match report in the Guardian this weekend which is the first time I can recall.

Perhaps they're making a stand against the football lads human rights movement who have inundated them recently.
Similarly, no comments were allowed on the strip cartoon on the Tuesday following the derby. ( I forgot name of cartoonist)

There are claims and counter claims as to who Matthew Hedges was but best not to get involved. We are not in a position to judge.

I guess some journalists may think they helped put pressure on the U.A.E to free him and I guess they did but they also made claims that they had no way of knowing.

Simon Hattenstone is a good journalist who always defends the small guy. I like his instincts. However other journalists went further and made claims which I thought were just not true i.e. that City fans had taken sides in this legal dispute on the basis of our affinity to City. I thought that was very unfair.

It is City fans who have just stood back and watched this develop, whilst journalists have pre-judged the case. We will never know whether he was genuine or not, and we never claimed to know. We're just football fans supporting our team, and continue to do so.

This is absolutely spot on. I spent much of my working life travelling around the Middle East among other areas and it's certainly a region where you don't get up to stupid and naive activities like Hedges did. For the record the UAE was the place where I was most relaxed after being in places like Iraq, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

Iraq and Syria have been bombed out of existence and western journalists expect to see a flourishing democracy there. Really? Find me a liberal democracy in the Middle East.

Now some journalists say that that maybe true but these regimes are oppressive and we are guilty of whataboutery. Well yes we are because that is the way the world has been divided and it is why one region is 'free' and another is wracked by war and instability. You can not look on from your position of comfort and point your finger and say behave like a normal rational human being. This is not about good behaviour and bad behaviour it is about 200 years of economic development.

Do they really want a world where football and sport is Western only and the rest of the world is excluded from their sport because their countries are not so advanced? That is what this comes down to.
